These stunning and ethereal prints by artist L.S. King are made by using the photo-silkscreen process to create an Akua Carborundum Gel Plate.
Read about King’s process below: “The mesh count of my screen is 230 and I screened the gel onto [an Akua Printmaking Plate.] My process starts with a digital photo. I shoot with an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II or an iPhone. Then I edited it in Photoshop and save it as a bitmap file (I size the photo to my plate size first and then save it as 300 dpi bitmap). I print this onto a transparency (matt black on my Epson 3880). Then I burn my screen and then screen the Akua carborundum gel onto an Akua Printmaking Plate. I tend to let it dry for 24 hours, but that’s just my personal work flow. In general, I use Arnhem 1618 paper that is lightly dampened for the actual print. I tend to treat the plate like I would a solar plate and use a brayer to put ink (Akua carbon black mixed with a bit of Burnt Umber) onto the plate and then use Akua Wipping Fabric to remove the excess ink. I use a small Ettan Etching Press to make the print.” -L.S. King

We are ringing in the new year with our on-going dedication to the power of color. Pantone has declared PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue (also known as “anti anxiety blue”) the color of the year 2020. To kick off the new year, we thought we’d get ahead of the game and give you the Akua recipe for the color of 2020! Mix equal parts Akua Intaglio Ultramarine Blue and Phthalo Blue, then add some Prussian Blue and a touch of Titianium White for the lighter/whiter hue. We couldn’t be more thrilled with what we’ve seen many of the Akua artists produce over this last year, so keep tagging #akuainks so we can see what you’ve got in store for next year! 🥂 #whatsonyourpalette #pantone #classicblue #antianxietyblue

UPCOMING WORKSHOP – Elise Wagner @elisewagnerstudio will be teaching Encaustic Collagraph Monotype at the shop of our good pal’s @burningbonespress ! Workshop dates are Sat&Sun, January 18 & 19, open to all levels. Head on over to burningbonespress.com to register!
Full workshop description below:
Combining monotype with encaustic’s textural elements is a process that explodes beyond the boundaries of printmaking! With this technique, encaustic wax is applied to a plexiglas printing plate rather than a traditional painting panel. Equally, collagraphs, which are traditionally made with collage materials printed from a plate or matrix, in this instance, the wax becomes the collage material and is used to build up for relief or intaglio printing.
The collagraph technique, pioneered by Wagner, allows artists to “break all the rules” of encaustic and reuse the plate again and again. The non-toxic soy and honey based Akua ink applied onto the collagraph merges with encaustic's natural resistance to moisture making it ideal for printmaking. We will be using a wax writer and incising tools to create line and a tacking iron to emboss various textures into the encaustic plate. Incising the surface employs methods of intaglio printing and dry point etching, building such a wax surface and combining it with the inks offers a variety of exploitable textures. #akuainks #whatsonyourpalette

UPCOMING WORKSHOP — kick off the upcoming New Year by signing up for "Ink Interaction" with Catherine Kernan at Susan Rostow's Brooklyn Studio:
January 11-12, 2020
Saturday and Sunday, 9 am to 5 pm

Layers of color on a single printing plate make gorgeous monotypes and monoprints. Learn how to modify Akua Intaglio inks for a myriad of effects.
Modifying the viscosities of inks leads to results unachievable any other way. Just as peanut butter will not stick to jelly, a loose ink will reject a stiff ink. This is true of traditional oil inks as well as newer, soy oil-based Akua Intaglio inks. Exploiting ink interactions yields multi-color prints from a single plate, and naturally leads to sequences of related images

Head over to susanrostow.com or the Akua workshops directory on the Speedball website for registration info!
