This morning I said to Nico: “Wow it’s beautiful out, I’d love to go for a run.” He said: “Why don’t you?” What I didn’t tell him is that in my mind I immediately went: “But I should practice first. I should at least do some sun salutations and some formal breathwork. I can’t teach tonight if I haven’t practiced.” Truth time: At this point in my life, yoga has become something that causes a lot of shoulding in me. I constantly feel like I should do more, since I barely manage to fit it in on family days. It’s a constant stress that I should practice, so most times I don’t feel like it because I’ve made it such an obligation. But, at least to me, this is not at all what yoga - or Life - should be about. It’s not about shoulding and forcing yourself to do things you don’t feel like. It’s about joy and aliveness. About loving being in your body.
So this morning, I went for a run instead of practicing. And I loved it. Being outside under the trees, pranayama with crisp spring air, meditation while moving. Let’s not be so hard on ourselves and go with what attracts us moment to moment.
