intention of directing :
Mozart's masterpiece opera <The Marriage of Figaro> is a didactic story with a comic Italian opera. Despite of the oriental view of the Count's extramarital affair as an aristocratic satire in which the Countess plays tricks with his servants, I would like to reinterpret this dominated and stereotyped image that has hardened through time, based on the original work. That is, it is not just consumption of this piece as a satirical play of aristocrats, but also a signal that heralded and brought about the French Revolution, and furthermore, as a starting point for the collapse of the social hierarchy and changes in citizen awareness. Therefore, instead of an opera script, which was edited and modified only for the entertainment aspect of the performance, I want to focus on the social timeliness of the original Bomarche's play and further visualize and expose various social structural system inherent in the work.
'What to focus and how to express it?'
I had a long-desire to reinterpret the existing story, but experienced difficulty in finding the right reevaluation. At the right moment, an Eastern idiom occurred to me. That is an idiom for the castle built on sand called "Sasangnugak"(砂上樓閣, 사상누각). This proverb means that it will soon collapse due to its flamboyant exterior but poor foundation. In the opera "The Marriage of Figaro," Sasangnugak stands for a palace of Counts built on the collapsing social hierarchy system.
The concern about visualizing this idea reminds me of two things; Renee Magritte's works of "Le Château des Pyrénées" and Spain castle of "Palacio de Cristal". I decided to use glass materials in my production, inspired by the Spanish palacio de Cristal. A shining, transparent but fragile glass-castle built on the chaotic social class is the Count's castle I'm trying to express.
