#TBT Dead floor. For an All-Star cheerleader, it is the ultimate nemesis. 💯 Now, I get it...you’re comfortable on spring. It’s convenient on spring. It does NOT hurt on spring!
Here’s the problem...if you’re trying to get that collegiate [scholarship] bag, then you have to make that transition to the dead zone. ☠️🤣 I’ve been to UCA and NCA College Nationals many times, and I have yet to see even one spring (much less an entire floor). So, how do I make the transition? I could do an entire clinic on this topic alone (would love to do so if anyone’s interesting in hearing my entire philosophy ♥️🤩). In the essence of time, I’m going to give you three quick training techniques that will definitely help.
1. Stack your floor panels. In the example above, we stacked three floor panel mats on top of each other. I spotted the athlete one time and we agreed it felt like a spring floor. She did it by herself on three. Then by herself on two. And then by herself on one.
2. Ankle balance is ankle strength. Hold a lib on one foot for 30 sec. Now try the other. Do you feel how your ankle “dances” back and forth? That’s your ankle telling you it needs to be stronger. Get your balance up, and that will push your landing pain down.
3. Increase your core strength. The worst ankle pain happens when you land short. My my my...hurts to just think about it. A stronger core will increase your rotational speed, so you don’t have to worry about the ankle crushing pain of landing a tuck or full short. 🤭
