Charlie was drafted and signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers just before the war broke out. He felt convicted to serve and put aside his baseball career to join the Marines, becoming a Gunnery Sergeant.
Once the war was over, the Chicago Cubs then sent him an offer, not knowing the wounds Charlie had sustained on Iwo Jima would leave him unable to play professional baseball again. ⚾️
Charlie continues to this day put other’s needs before his own, just as he did 75 years ago. Thank you for your courage Charlie! - 3 minutes ago
