🚫Prevention AND Treatment of :
Thrombosis due to atrial fibrillation
Heparin is an indirect thrombin inhibitor... (which has multiple effects on the clotting cascade) but to keep it simple.....
It slows down the clotting process to help prevent blood clots!
ADMINISTERED either subcutaneously or intravenously.
Heparin is dosed by the patient’s weight, and by reviewing the aPTT ranges.
Normal aPTT: 30-40 seconds
Heparinized aPTT: 60-80 seconds
🩸Always rotate sites with SQ injection, and do not rub area after injection.
🩸Monitor for any unusual bleeding:
-Severe headache (bleeding in brain)
🩸Monitor for vital changes:
-CBC (platlets, Hgb, Hct)
❌ ANTIDOTE: protamine sulfate
- Avoid NSAIDs & ASA while on Heparin
- Make Providers aware your on heparin prior to any procedures, so it can be stopped in a timely matter.
