PM Response - regarding #fishing for #RedtailSurfperch in the #WestportWashington areas... Well here goes...
There’s some great fishing off the left side of the Westport jetty (when it’s open) starting this time of year for “Redtail surfperch” especially on the in-coming tides - but the beaches can be much better for our younger & older folks mainly because it’s a lot safer fishing off the beach in the tides casting out your offerings - where you really don’t need to stand out that far in tide / water ( mainly because these fish will be feeding in the surf ) what so ever to catch these tasty little critters - using baits like live #sandshrimp or raw #clam necks or small pieces of raw #squid or cut up raw #prawns or artificials etc, etc, etc - it’s just so many interesting & wonder ways to catch these amazing fish.
As for tips in being successful - you really don’t need expensive tackle just sensible. Personally I like @santiamfishingrods
Also I like size 4 to size 2 hooks (not 4/0 or 2/0 but the smaller 4’s & 2’s)
-my lead I take with me will be from 1 ounces all the way up to 2 oz - which will be cannonballs, tear drops and pyramid weights -where I put the weight on the bottom come up 12 to 18 inches tie on my hook come up another 12 to 18 inches tie on another hook and that’s it. -but I would say, a good salt water reel is the way to go - also I prefer a spinning reel over a bait caster for a lot of reasons - even though I am successful using either one.
Now my preference as for “Line test” I like 12 pound test.
As for a fishing rod - anything from a 8’ 1/2” - 13’ will work - just keep in mind, the lighter the better.
If any other information is needed please let me know & I’ll respond when possible 😁
Once again - good luck to everyone & always remember, safety first! Plus it’s always a great idea in checking your state rules and regulations for any areas that you will venture in for your protection - because tickets from our awesome, hard working & outstanding @thewdfw WDFW / Washington Department Fish & Wildlife office’s isn’t a great way to start what could be the beginning of a remarkable, fun day on the water. - 4 hours ago
