Super quick mandala made with our DIY mandala pieces. Little Mr wanted to use 'his' mandala pieces today, not 'my' ones (the Grapat) so he built a forest and path for his dinosaurs visiting the museum while I sat next to him making a mini-mandala and joining in when he wanted me to. .

We're all dino-mad in this house!! I went to our Toy Library yesterday and brought back the IKEA doll's house as an experiment. I've seen lots of people here on Instagram using the house as an invitation to learn or as a new theme provocation and thought I'd see how Little Mr reacted to something similar. Thanks @naptimewonders for inspiring me! As Dinos are always a hit, and it was easy for a time-poor mama to rustle up in 5 minutes, we went with a dinosaur theme. Some books, a bowl of mini dinosaurs, our bigger dinosaurs, playdough and a T-Rex cookie cutter.
And an entire evening of play. Little Mr was exhausted when he got home from daycare yesterday and I was SO glad I'd set this up as it was such a life saver avoiding some of the inevitable over-tiredness tantrums. Yes, we still had tears, and he absolutely screamed when I tried to get the playdough out with him (usually my go-to calming activity!) But he was happy getting the big dinosaurs to play in and around the house and 'reading' some of the books. It's been great again this evening for more big dino play and making dino tracks in playdough. We've also stuck our green DIY mandala pieces in the playdough to make grass for all our herbivorous dinosaurs to eat which was 'yummy yummy in their tummy'. .

Billie has been super into lying under her high chair and playing with the family straps lately. So this morning I went through my (extensice) scarf collection to find some of different textures to stick up in her doorway. At first she didn't seem interested but she keeps coming back to feel them and grab them!
My only problem is that I stuck them to the inside of the door frame.... So I'm going to have to take them down when I want to close the door for naptime. #whoops

Valentine's playdough box. Anyone else think that playdough really is the best? It's just so incredibly versatile.

Here are just some of the ways we use it: *loose parts play - like this box, there are no instructions, just do what you want. *a base for smallworld or sensory play *as a way to calm down after a hectic day at daycare *making animal tracks / car tracks / seeing what imprints objects make *mandala base *making roads / gardens/ seas for various toys to play in * stamping letters / numbers to consolidate recognition *practising fine motor skills - cutting with scissors, rolling with a rolling pin, using hands to make ropes/balls *making creative creatures (snails, dinosaurs) * pretend birthday cakes or food

But those are just SOME ways to use playdough and the benefits are endless too - obviously fine motor skills but also language skills, emotional resilience, as a tool to reset and relax. I often find that Little Mr will make up a scenario while he's playing and invariably some of the things he's experienced throughout the day will come out- his worries, his highlights, quotes of what people have said... I almost always have playdough as a post-daycare option for him.
Oh and it's so incredibly easy/ cheap to make too! .

Friday Flatlay! OK it's already Saturday here but I set this up yesterday when it was still Friday so it counts! Tying in with Little Mr's current love of bugs and our Hungry Caterpillar activity yesterday, I figured a caterpillar would be most appropriate. It got a huge cheeky grin and sideways glance at me this morning. And then some dinosaurs moved in. Because clearly tiny kmart dinosaurs lived in an era of epic-ly HUGE caterpillars. 🀣 If my little guy had any sense of scale, he'd be terrified of this!
Anyway, while the flatlay itself didn't spark interaction, it did spark excitement about the Grapat mandala pieces we got recently. So he and I spent a fair amount of time building dinosaur enclosures on the sofa for the herbivores 'so they can be safe'. .
Grapat from @neskkids

Rainbow semicircles from @babipur

Grimms rainbow, stacking bowl and @sarahssilks giant rainbow scarf from @dragonflytoys

Coloured blocks are a DIY play hack with Jumbling Tower bricks from @kmartau

Hungry Caterpillar bookish play. AGES ago I made a Hungry Caterpillar posting tube for Little Mr which we played with for quite a while. But it's been sat in a cupboard for a few months and I'd forgotten about it. As Little Mr is currently into getting ALL the toys from the cupboard, this was discovered a few days ago. We've lost a plum and a pickle along the way and I had to repaint his face, but otherwise, all still in perfect working order.
This afternoon I've set up a quick gross and fine motor skills activity - we'll read the book together on the sofa with the posting caterpillar and when we get to a particular fruit or food item, Little Mr has to go and fetch it from the blackboard, bring it back and feed the caterpillar. Or that's the idea... he'll probably just pull them all off at once and post them before even getting to the book reading part πŸ˜‚

Cardboard kitchen. I feel I have totally upped the ante with this one. We've had a big cardboard box upstairs for weeks now and Mr C_T brought it downstairs to throw out today...unless I did something with it. I've had this stove-oven idea n my head since we got the box but I just hadn't got round to making it. Today was clearly the day. And Little Mr has been all over it - trying to get in with making it while I was cutting pieces, he's so excited that the dials move and that you can change the time on the digital clock . He's spent the past half hour making something in the oven for me using our real pots and pans. Hopefully this lasts until at least Wednesday when his cousins are here for the day 🀞🏻
@today.our.children @learning_in_colour Not to your standards but we're pretty excited about it.

DIY playdough stamp. I saw @the_owen_chronicles great number stamps and know that she was inspired by @hummingbirdsatplay so I thought I'd give it a go too. I found the embellishments at the local dollar shop and the cube at Lincraft. Paired with homemade playdough and it's a pretty cheap activity 😊

I repurposed an old yoga mat today just using some patterned tape. Less than Β£1's worth.

Lil is learning to hop and skip as her core strengthens and of course there is the maths element to this. She can count to 10 but isn't always sure what the numbers look like so this works perfectly for her.
Balance and coordination are essential skills for children to learn, without it they can't write, sit still, play sports.... the list goes on. This one is worth a little bit of effort, especially as the winter sets in and the children are outside less and less.

What do you do when you're stuck inside on a hot day because your baby sister can't cope outside? Make a plane! Or...a boat! Or...a car! Or...I know! A TRAIN! These nappy boxes went through all sorts of imaginary vehicles before Little Mr settled on a train and wanted me to make wheels. Which we had to paint black (he painted one and a little bit before he was done) And once the wheels were dry and we'd stuck them on (I glued, he supervised) we then needed a funnel and a whistle, and windows in the carriage. I suggested buffers, which actually turned out to be the bit he talked about most. Initially he had been in the box, driving it in his imagination, but after it's transformation, our ostrich/emu/fuzzball became designated train driver and other soft toys were the passengers. At one point I had to add blinds to the windows so that they could open and close, and inevitably the carriage and engine had to go back to the steamworks for repairs a few times due to a couple of games of 'Bish, Bash, Bosh' but this has been a great afternoon of play. 2 nappy boxes, 8 toilet rolls, a bit of tissue paper and a hot glue gun. We could have painted it, but really he was just too keen to play.
What do you think @today.our.children? Tagging @recycleandplay as well because every part of this is in it's second or third incarnation (that tissue paper is used so often in smallworld set-ups!) .

A flatlay invitation to create... I'm pretty new to the idea of a flatlay so excuse me if this is actually totally wrong πŸ˜• I've created a (pretty rubbish) Halloween picture using our DIY mandala pieces and have set out a tray with the other pieces next to it for Little Mr to find in the morning. I've no idea what he will do with it/ if he'll like it or interact with it at all, but I decided last week that I would start creating more things like this just to expose him to a range of possibilities. I really love how his imagination is developing and that he is beginning to use loose parts in different ways each day. He is continually telling stories and having conversations between his toys which I can hear as I put Little Miss to bed - what I find super cute is that all his toys are very polite to each other - "You have to get out the way...please! " "Sorry it was an accident," and "Thank you" are some of the most often repeated phrases 😍 Anyway, we shall see what he thinks of this in the morning...

A little bit of very easy #mathsonmondays to join in with #manywaystoplay_foil
Kate from @toddler_and_mummy posted a great activity for number recognition and counting the other day and I set up something very similar for Little Mr this afternoon.
Roll the dice, open the corresponding box and unwrap the foil to reveal a number which he stamped into playdough. And then he found the number on the kmart moneybox and put the right number of popsicle sticks in. Once we'd unwrapped all the numbers, we extended it even further by me stamping a number and Little Mr pushed the right number of black stones in. Then he realised that you could push in the popsicle sticks and that they were the right height for dinosaurs to eat trees and leaves...and dino play ensued πŸ˜‚πŸ¦•πŸ¦–
This was great not just for numbers but also fine motor skills- opening the boxes, unwrapping the foil, stamping in playdough and removing the stamp and lastly posting the popsicle sticks into the gaps.

I see a mandala, Little Mr sees a race track! ➑️ Swipe to see what he and I made out of my rainbow mandala.
Our DIY mandala collection is growing and also being used far more. I've been making mandalas in the evenings (simple ones, I'm not talented like @woodnutty @playroomstories or @sunday_cottage ) Little Mr inevitably admires them in the morning and then goes off to do his own thing. This rainbow mandala was intact almost a whole day before he started driving cars through it and then moving bits to make a road. I helped of course once he'd started and stated that the cars would be racing but he did a lot of rearranging himself before he was happy and thrn we played cars for a good 15 minutes. So mama and toddler play win!

Hallooo.. Mulai sekarang admin lebih sering upload hasil #diyplayhack #playideas terutama dari #cardboard yaa.. Feel free to remake and replay.
.
.
Bahannya
.
πŸ’œ kardus bekas tebal/bisa beberapa kardus tipis ditempel
πŸ’œ label name/kertas label
πŸ’œ selotip bening
.
.
Hehe
.
.
Bisa juga buat food pick ala ala dengan tusuk gigi ya, lalu tempel dengan print out huruf kecil, hijaiyah, angka, everything you want! πŸ˜ƒ

#alphabetplay #harmonialphabet . . Hallooo.. Mulai sekarang admin lebih sering upload hasil #diyplayhack #playideas terutama dari #cardboard yaa.. Feel free to remake and replay. . . Bahannya . πŸ’œ kardus bekas tebal/bisa beberapa kardus tipis ditempel πŸ’œ label name/kertas label πŸ’œ selotip bening . . Hehe . . Bisa juga buat food pick ala ala dengan tusuk gigi ya, lalu tempel dengan print out huruf kecil, hijaiyah, angka, everything you want! πŸ˜ƒ . . I've been a bit inspired recently. A few weeks ago @manywaystoplay had felt as their theme and I made our first play mat. But I was soooo impressed with the little peg people costumes that I saw that week from @threefoldmama and @hills.play When I made our scraps play mat, I already had the thought of a polar mat with an igloo, ice hole and people, but hadn't thought I'd dress the people. But obviously I have! So I made a little invitation to play for Little Mr when he woke up this morning. I left penguins, an orca and a dolphin nearby for if he wanted them - the second photo shows he did!
If you want to see some truly wonderful play mats and set ups, go over to @melanieshanks35 who is just SO talented!

I saw a wonderful diorama over at @jessie_and_jacob of a sea theme and it was so amazing I knew I wanted to recreate it with Little Mr. So we got out our @littlebrianpaintsticks (they are getting good use at the moment!) and Little Mr got painting. He did the swirly blue background, coloured all the fish and did most of the seaweed too. I put some googly eyes on the fish and stuck magnets all over both the background and the seabed floor. The fish, seaweed and shells have magnets on them so they can be placed anywhere but the 'piece de resistance' is actually that the background is kept on with velcro so it can be switched out! I have aspirations to make different backdrops that can be switched around at will...maybe a construction site, train station etc.
This week it's GLITTER/CONFETTI as a theme for @manywaystoplay I'm not a fan of glitter - I have primary school horror as it gets everywhere and you can't get rid of it. But I got over my aversion long enough for us to put some sparkly blue confetti and silver glitter on the background. It's just come up as white streaks in the photos, but it IS there and our kitchen table is covered! Little Mr and I enjoyed creating this yesterday and he was excited enough to show his dad, but he hasn't really played with it since so maybe Under the Sea wasn't the best starting theme? If I get an opportunity to put both kiddos down for 10 minutes, I might try and draw some diggers for another scene...
Don't forget to check out #manywaystoplay_glitter and pop over to @the_bees_knees_adelaide who is guest host this week and has a wonderful account!
Also tagging @recycleandplay as this is just an empty baby wipes box!

DIGGING FOR LADYBIRDS &NUMBERS 🐞
. .
My plan was to do this activity outside in the garden but it’s heavy rain today (bye bye summer 😭 ) so I had to improvise abit! I set this up for Barnaby to find the β€˜naughty little ladybirds’ who had crawled off their leaves and gone into the garden. Barnaby had to dig and search for them and find them and put the correct number of ladybirds on each leaf. I used green rice for the grass and the ladybirds I got from amazon. Barnaby couldn’t stop telling the ladybirds off each time he found one- this did make me smile😍. We had several more tries after the first go as he loved doing this - there something kids love about little searching games 🐞🐞
.
When Poppy got home from school I did this activity for her but used maths sums for her to work out how many ladybirds she had to find. She had one go and then insisted it was time for a snack 😏
:

This activity covers β€˜digging’ in #natureplayseptember hosted by @wild_mountain_child @grays_at_play @allthemumery @jessie_and_jacob @thejoyjournal .
Also covers #weloveautumnplay2019 with @rachelmoffatt13 @ourlittletinkerstreasures @babyplay123 .@earlyyearsoutdoor @aplayfulmama πŸπŸπŸ„πŸ„
.
Hoping it’s dry tomorrow so we can get back outside! 🌸

I was quite happy when I saw that this week's @manywaystoplay theme is FELT as I had just finished my first felt play mat. It doesn't even remotely compare to @melanieshanks35 gorgeous playmats (go check out her page for some gorgeous play-spiration and play bases) but it's not bad considering it is entirely made of scrap felt that I had already. I actually wasn't going to get this out for a while as Little Mr is currently really enjoying the train set, magnatiles and dinosaurs but we haven't got a smallworld set-up at the moment and he's been so imaginative in his play recently that maybe we should. Woolworths Ooshies are optional- I'm going to guess that they move out and dinos move in.
Check out @resources4learning for more felt ideas as she is guest host this week and has some amazing ideas!
