Sometimes you get lucky 🍀. PTEC Winnipeg spent a year planning their Workplace Mentor Week that placed high school students at notable Winnipeg companies to gain valuable work placement experience.
I have worked with PTEC throughout the year. I presented to the students in October and was part of their Demo Day in November. Every week, students have “Fun Friday” where they can work on their projects. Some build fully interactive games, while others build databases that demonstrate the logic behind how they work.
At Demo Day, I played a space video game developed by a student named Austin. It was impressive, and I remember thinking he has a bright future. 🍀 A few weeks ago, I scrolled through Instagram and randomly found this picture of me playing Austin’s game.
Leading up to Mentor Week, my software development team and I thought of a fun machine learning project for our intern. However, we weren’t sure how complicated the week-long project should be because we didn’t know which PTEC student was assigned to Pluto. 🍀 It was Austin. He completed our project two days early.
The Monday following Mentor Week, I sent my team home to work remotely because of Covid-19. 🍀 The timing was perfect.
