Long post alert.
Humanity has two problems. A heart which is at best inconsistent in its goodness, and an inconsistent record of conduct. We have neither the time or the will, to perfect our character before we die. Everyone of us will in our natural state die and stand condemned before a perfectly Just, and Holy Judge. Any worldview which teaches a person can please God by their own righteousness, is promoting a very low view of our Creator.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ addresses this need by dealing with both our hearts' and our records. That is to say by Gods grace we are given a new heart to desire the will of God, which will eventually be perfected upon our passing; and we are given an imputed righteousness to correct our past record of moral failure. As Christian's we KNOW it would be the height of arrogance and self righteousness to even think about standing before God with a blemished record, and that the judge of the universe would simply overlook it.
Christianity is NOT a religion of self improvement, or a simple philosophy which seeks to know God by interpreting nature. Christianity at its core addresses two fundamental problems with humanity. It recognizes our need for divine intervention so as to transform our hearts (which we know by experience torment us daily), and the need to perfect our record so as to stand innocent and blameless before Him.
This in my opinion is the ultimate issue. How can an imperfect sinner' have the confidence to stand before a righteous God.
