Knowing what your unsupplemented vitamin D levels are prior to going into the winter is essential both for knowing how much of the sunlight you have actually assimilated, but to also know what your likelihood is of having winter colds, flus or depression. There are a lot of actions you will need to take during the winter to offset a low Vitamin D level, but none of them are as good as getting enough sun during the summer months.⠀

You probably aren’t getting the vitamin D you need. In the Pacific Northwest, the sun isn’t high enough in the sky in the fall and winter for the sun’s UVB rays to reach your skin and produce vitamin D.⁠

A good level of vitamin D (ideally between 60 -70ng/mL) is essentual to our health in so many ways, especially with respect to our

The little boost we get in the summer is often not enough to bring our levels to acceptable levels never mind last us through the winter. 
Vitamin D stores last for approximately 3 months, so the little  reserve we may (or may not) have from the summer sun has likely been depleted at this stage .

Am I the only one who starts dreaming about summer right about now as fall creeps slowly toward winter and the days get darker and colder? In Canada and other northerly countries it’s an ideal time to ensure your “sunshine” vitamin D levels are optimal to strengthen your immunity, your bones and your mood. .
☀️I know we’re supposed to be “in the moment” and fully present which includes embracing the season we are in but I also believe that channelling your favourite season whenever you need it is a very healing practice. And if your vitamin D levels are particularly low your mood change may be a concern at this time of year. Several of my patients experience seasonal affective disorder which has the perfectly appropriate acronym SAD. .
☀️So to literally prevent feeling SAD one of the first steps is having your vitamin D levels checked via bloodwork to see where they’re at and then supplementing with vitamin D3 if necessary. .

☀️ For me also channelling the warmth and brightness of the sun is super essential during the darker months. Some of my patients even use light therapy to prevent or manage SAD.

🐈🦮Did you know pets can have their vitamin D levels checked too to make sure they are optimal? Yup I’ve got the whole family on vitamin D3 to keep the sunshine vitamin flowing all year round!.

💥Important pro tip-most labs will report if your levels of vitamin D are simply “sufficient” and your doctor may not flag it if it is within the sufficient level. But many integrative and holistic doctors believe that for disease prevention and improved health  we need to aim to have levels higher ( sometimes 2x higher) than what is considered sufficient. Therefore make sure to get a copy of your vitamin D lab test to be able to review it with your entire healthcare team.
