In the early 1960s, @USAirForce pilot Ed Dwight was in training to be the first black astronaut for @NASA , which could have put him on one of the #Apollo missions to the moon. For reasons still not clear - although racism is suspected by many - he didn't make the cut, and by 1966 he left the Air Force. In the ensuing years he pursued his interest in sculpting, and in 1977 he earned a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the @UOfDenver. Since then his sculptures, mostly dedicated to African-American history, have become integral parts of memorials throughout the United States.
