Its construction began in the 1st century B.C., and it achieved its greatest splendor in the 1st century A.D. Certain parts of the villa were used until the 6th centure On the southern side of the bay stood a sumptuous summer residence, with an economic function, with two peristyles. An integral part of the complex were temples erected in honor of the sea god Neptune, the Capitoline Triad and the goddess of love and beauty, Venus, situated at the end of the bay. Dieta, palestra, thermae, fishpond and the economic part were situated at the northern side of the bay. By an interesting system of promenades stretching one kilometer along the sea, all the buildings were connected into a unique whole, in ideal harmony with the landscape. Besides this villa furbished with mosaics, frescoes, stucco decoration and precious marble, there were a number of Roman villas of mostly economic function on Brijuni, the villa on Kolci hill being the particularly interesting one among them. Le labour des champs qui se poursuit d’année en année remue la terre et fait progressivement remonter des artéfacts vers la surface. ⠀ Ainsi, un laboureur de Chassenard, dans l’Allier, travaillant dans son champ en 1874 découvrit ce masque de fer. Le dépôt constituait le mobilier funéraire d’un soldat romain et comprenait notamment des coins monétaires utilisés pour frapper des monnaies de #Tibère (14-37), ainsi qu’un torc en bronze, un ceinturon militaire et un glaive, surprenant, puisqu’il est rare que les Romains soient enterrés avec leurs armes. ⠀ Le « masque » était en vérité la visière d’un casque de parade. Elle était à l’origine couverte d’un placage de cuivre et d’argent, mais comme le reste du casque celle-ci a disparue. Porté lors de joutes et de parades par les cavaliers romains, on peut raisonnablement penser que la sépulture est celle d’un officier de cavalerie du Ier siècle ap. J.-C.. ⠀ On remarquera qu’avec le temps et l’oxydation, la visière du casque s’est retrouvée soudée par la rouille à la cotte de mailles contre laquelle elle reposait.
