“Growing up on the North Shore, a deep appreciation for the outdoors was instilled in me at a very young age. So when I see the threats that climate change is so rapidly imposing on nature, I'm compelled to do what I can to try and reverse the damage. I am committed to reducing my personal carbon footprint, and I’m glad to be at a company that allows me to connect my passion for sustainability into my daily work. It’s been exciting to participate in the Climate Action Advisory Committee and explore ways that AES can empower and educate individuals with the tools and knowledge to make more sustainable choices.”

‘There is more gold in a tonne of mobile phones than a tonne of gold ore’

Timber differentiates itself from other building materials in that it can sequester up to 1.6 tonnes of CO2 per m3 of timber, which can be locked up within structural elements. However this value is a theoretical maximum and in practice the sequestered value depends on the end-of-life scenario of the element. If we landfill all our timber buildings at end-of-life, then all the CO2 will be released and we are simply delaying climate change.

One current area of research within P&M’s Climate Action Group is how we can incorporate circular economy principles within everyday practice, and particularly the adaptability and deconstruction of structures, allowing building elements to be easily recovered and re-used.
Using timber we need to view structural elements as carbon stocks that can be banked within buildings. This requires a shift in our mindset - we must design buildings now to be easily re-used in the future.
I hope you enjoyed the takeover and hopefully there’s lots of food for thought. Please get in contact if you’d like to discuss climate action and our mass timber research within P&M.

...and that becomes the perfect moment to reach out to help those in need, anyway you can. .
@mckarchitects are proud to help one such family who lost everything in the Tathra bushfire of 2018. The process is long and takes every bit of energy those who’ve suffered can muster. But with help comes hope, and hope goes a long way.
Peter Boyce (PCA) got the ball rolling, literally flying into Tathra post fire, putting his hand up, and offering to help those in need, gratis. When Peter contacted our office we didn’t hesitate to jump on board and help those in need with him.
.
The devastating recent bushfires have created a heightened awareness of the need to rethink our approach to habitat and the environment. They’ve also created an opportunity for Australians to do what they do best; to help those in need. .
This weekend we are trading our pencils for our tool belts, and together with our friends from @tokiconstruction are heading to Tathra to literally help with the rebuild of this property lost in March 2018.
.
Thousands of families have been affected by the recent bushfires, and this is the grim reality ahead of them: the rebuilding process is long and arduous and will probably become harder once the Authorities review the current standards in light of recent events.
.
So we challenge our colleagues to reach out to those in need; to offer your services to help those overwhelmed by devastation; to provide hope in the process of rebuilding lives. Together we can make a difference, even if it is just one family at a time.
.
The image was taken by @michellecarts from her own site during the recent extreme bushfire event. The harrowing experience of a red sky eclipsing your rebuild site is unimaginable to those unaffected, and cannot be underestimated.

You know that sinking feeling when you hit send on an email and realise you’ve left out a major announcement?
.
That was me after I finished The Drill today.
.
So I’m making amends by posting the Institute’s call for expressions of interest - for a newly established climate action and sustainability taskforce - here.
.
To those who have been calling on the Institute to declare a #climateemergency; to those wondering whether Architects Declare should sit inside the Institute; to those questioning whether the profession should be doing more about carbon and clients and #allthethings, now is your time to act.
.
Visit the Institute’s website or google the terms on this image and start preparing your application. .
They are due on Friday 7 Feb and there are five places, for two-year terms.
.
Go!!

I’m so grateful to my friend, fellow Churchill Fellow, former Steel Profile colleague and client Adam Haddow for his kind words about how I’ve helped SJB with their awards entries (swipe to see!).
.
This year I’ve distilled everything I’ve learned about Awards - from writing entries for architecture clients; as a journalist/editor using Awards portals for story ideas; and as a juror myself - into an online workshop for Architects.
.
It’s happening on Tues 4 Feb (1pm daylight savings; 12.30 in Adelaide; 12pm in Brisbane; 10am in Perth) and it will help you:
➡️ create a strategy for your entries:
➡️ write compelling entry text; and ➡️ repurpose your entries to appeal to new clients.
.
Don’t do Awards entries the way you’ve always done them...
.
Learn how to boost your ROI by making them work much harder for you this year.
.
With my simple system and Awards blueprint, It’s not too late to approach your Awards differently in 2020. (And if you’re in Queensland and would like to access today’s Beta workshop before your Institute awards are due next Friday please DM me).
.
The market is shifting... are you?

Passive House in the news!
.
The ABC @leigh_sales aired a special feature on Passive House on the 7:30 report last night.
It detailed how we can all save money while still helping to protect the environment and our wellbeing.
View the report in our link in bio to discover a range of building typologies that the PH standard has been applied to across Sydney and Melbourne, and the benefits the occupants are now enjoying...guilt-free!

Step one in our 2020 aim to be carbon neutral is to switch to 100% Certified GreenPower by the end of this month.
It’s really very easy to do, any energy company can provide it. Just call your current provider and ask to switch over to their Certified GreenPower supply.
Going green means using energy that doesn’t release carbon emissions, reducing your carbon footprint and supporting renewable energy development. Win, win!
Let us know below when you have made the switch!

UK Architects Declare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency

@fiftypointeight have today added our name to the #architectsdeclare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency.

The twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are the most serious issue of our time. Buildings and construction play a major part, accounting for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats.

For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour. Together with our clients, we will need to commission and design buildings, cities and infrastructures as indivisible components of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system.

The research and technology exist for us to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will. Recognising this, we are committing to strengthen our working practices to create architecture and urbanism that has a more positive impact on the world around us.

Posted • @johnwardlearchitects We're going carbon neutral in 2020. ⠀
.⠀
Join us. We will achieve this through a 3 step process: ⠀
.⠀
1. 100% GreenPower by 30 January 2020 ⠀
2. Carbon Audit by 30 June 2020 ⠀
3. Carbon Neutral by 30 December 2020 ⠀
.⠀
Together we can and will create positive change. ⠀
.⠀
Step one is to switch to 100% Certified GreenPower by the end of this month. It’s easy to do. Just call your current energy provider and ask to switch over to 100% Certified GreenPower.⠀
.
Buying 100% GreenPower means you are supporting renewable energy, not coal. Importantly, it will mean that you will have no carbon emissions associated with your electricity usage.⠀

#EngineerTakeover One of the most eye-catching recent publications is the C40 report on The Future of Urban Consumption in a 1.5oC World which highlights the amount of ‘material switching’ required to achieve the 1.5oc limits by 2030. The report’s research has found that 70% of commercial buildings need to be switched to mass timber from the predominant steel and concrete framing options. Whilst in Oregon, I visited the new Adidas North America HQ in Portland which was on site. The new development included two new five and three storey mass timber buildings. As well as the carbon and construction benefits of using mass timber, research has shown that using exposed mass timber within working environments can increase productivity and well-being. There are many different typologies for mass timber within the commercial environment and the typical preconception that you can’t get mass timber to fit a commercial grid has been challenged: spans exceeding 9.0m are very much achievable. Our Climate Action Group members are researching efficient commercial typologies using mass timber, as opposed to steel and concrete-framed structures, and are looking to partner with commercial developers and designers within Europe who want to add something like this to their portfolio. @arty_coates

Action.

I have created this page ‘design conscious’ out of desperation; what to do, how to help? And yet, out of this crisis, there has been a rallying of public support, such generosity and courage. As an architect, I have been incredibly impressed by individual and groups within my industry, including the Australian Institute of Architect, Architects Declare, Architects Assist, as well as all those firms committing to action to reduce their carbon emissions. The art world has similarly mobilised to raise money for the bushfire relief.
I intend to use this forum to share the inspiring work and initiatives of my colleagues and others; let’s not lose the momentum towards change.

My heart goes out to those affected by the devastating bushfires that continue to rage on and claim more lives and habitats.
Earlier in 2019, Brian Kahn published an article that asked, is climate change our generation’s Chernobyl moment? Certainly for me, this bushfire disaster has seemed like a turning point (for the public at least). I hope that out of this crisis of such unfathomable scale, we are spurred to action. The world is watching.

This horrific bushfire season has been a real wake up call.
For me, the urgency around the climate crisis was steadily building throughout 2019. I was dismayed by political inaction and denial, but equally inspired by the courage of Greta Thunberg, heartened by the school strikers, impressed by industry bodies banding together in important ways, such as through the formation of Architects Declare and Architects Assist.
The fires, occurring over our typically carefree holiday season, has brought into focus for me that there is nothing else so important in our world now, and maybe in our lifetime, than combatting the impact of climate change.

Mood for today 💥💥💥 What do you think? Is this statement true? Is our industry really suffering a crisis of confidence? If yes, what does that even mean? And what can or should we do about it? 💡
•
I am not going to share my personal opinion this time - but would love to hear your view points. Is Frank Gehry 'wrong' about this? And if you had the power do make ONE CHANGE in our industry - what would you be or do? 👾🤓

We've been a little quiet on Social Media lately as we try to process the devastation and loss occurring around the country. From bushfires, to flash flooding, the extremity of what is happening in Australia has been a huge wake up call.

As Architects and Interior Designers, we have a responsibility to ensure that what we do and what we create has a positive and ethical effect on the world. We have been so inspired by the actions of our friends and colleagues within the industry, and the activism shown by Australians across the country.

In 2020 Mani Architecture will be working towards real change. Moving forward, we’ll be doing everything we can to be better.

The architect for this housing development in Copenhagen Anders Lendager used panels of brickwork taken from the demolition of the city’s Carlsberg brewery. Individually the bricks couldn’t be reused but the 1 metre square panels were stacked together to form a striking patchwork facade for the new apartment block. We think it makes for a very striking composition and shows an innovative approach to reuse.
