To emphasize the dramatic effects of a subject, painters can use several "tricks" : the opposition of colors, shadows and lights or movements given to the different characters. They can also play with depths and perspectives. We have a very good example here, in this fight opposing in Jersey, in 1781, English (in red in the foreground) and French (in the background on the right). The artist, John Singleton Copley, puts the victorious English soldiers in the bright light, making combinations with their red and white uniforms, places in the middle of the canvas the dead hero and the British flags. He also organizes his central characters by mixing opposite diagonals (legs, arms). He underlines the English victory by strongly accentuating the movement from left to right (by the diagonals of the rifles or the inclination of the soldiers' bodies). "The Death of Major Peirson" (6/6), John Singleton Copley, 1783, Tate Britain, London.

"The Death of Major Peirson" (2/6), John Singleton Copley, 1783, Tate Britain, London.

Getting started on this commissioned painting.
This is a black and white underpainting, the skeleton of a piece, giving it basic form and texture.
All the things I’ve learned over the last year are really starting to make a difference in my work, I think. Hopefully I just keep getting better at this! 😆
Super thankful to @caitteileen for choosing me as the artist to complete this vision for her.
