Vibrant. Divergent. Expressive. Cristina Popovici’s ‘Interval Chrome’ is like a melodic interval with differing pitch between grandiose tones. The dark foreboding blacks flow and morph into somber greens and greys while dynamic reds, oranges, yellows and fluorescent green play and dive across the canvas.
The dramatic and compelling use of black in ‘Interval Chrome’ is like an anchor to an otherwise vivid force of colour. An arc of glistening red glass paint sweeps energetically downwards, pooling and rippling as it slows, swelling to break free of the painting plane. Thin lines of colour weave and wander, criss-crossing and dancing with their ever-present nemesis, black.
Rather than paint the world she sees, Cristina paints the world she feels. Her practice in abstract expressionism has stemmed from a classical training in Fine Arts in Europe which has given Cristina the confidence to express herself, her own way. With no preparatory drawings Cristina’s inspiration is processed into emotion and energy, building and surging through her gestures onto the canvas. Popovici’s vast toolbox of techniques, mediums and supports creates an exciting vocabulary of exploration and an ever-evolving body of work. @cristinapopoviciartist
