✨Muslim voices of South Asia✨: "Hello South Asian Today, my name is Kauthar Abdulalim (@kauthh ) and I’d like to wish you all a Happy International Muslim Womxn’s Day!
I’m a screenwriter and director from Melbourne but originally from Kenya with Indian/Pakistani heritage.
Being someone with multiple cultural/racial backgrounds can occasionally get confusing and overwhelming, however, my Muslim identity has been one that has always remained a constant in my life. It gives me stability & comfort within regardless of identity battles!
We’ve been living in very challenging and Islamophobic times where it’s been a constant struggle dealing with systemic racist attitudes and propaganda that further escalate the entrenched biases and negative stereotyping of Muslims, especially when it comes to representation of Muslims in mainstream media.
As a filmmaker who is blessed with opportunities within the Australian screen industry, I feel privileged to be one of the few voices that provide an alternate narrative about Muslims. Through my work, I hope that I am able to help bridge the gap and be a source of enlightenment (and entertainment!) - for both Muslims and non-Muslims - and share stories from my community and about my experiences.
I think that South Asian Today (and other culturally-specific platforms) are great for diaspora communities to find each other, celebrate one another and build a future generation of a strong community who is proud of their heritage, as well as be a ‘home’ for those who need it & when they need it." ------------------------------------------------------------
