Never seen such a relatable meme, like half the time I don’t even get them haha (autism). My voices are really bad which in turn is making my mood low which is then effecting my communication which is stopping me asking for support for the voices. UGHHHH FUCK.
Was supposed to see my CPN today but they were off sick and I declined to see on call but as soon as I left I regretted it. Seeing CPN tomorrow. I really need help with controlling voices. I hate this, I had been doing so so well like this isn’t fair at all. Really really hope this is a blip and not the start of an episode. I cannot go inpatient or even consider it as an option, I have too much to lose.
Positive of the day is I went to work and it wasn’t awful, I mean it wasn’t great but that was expected. I’ll take that win.
Sleep had been terrible which obviously isn’t helping with voices. But again the voices make me agitated which stops me sleeping which makes the voices worse which makes me agitated etc.. I need some help to break the cycle. Really hope I can get some sleep tonight 😴 😴 •

The prospect of eating a new food can be scary.

That’s why you so often hear NO when you offer a new food to your extremely picky eater (or why you see the meltdown, food thrown on the floor, etc!). That is totally NORMAL.

But it doesn’t have to be permanent.

Your child may not be ready to eat YET.
I know that can be frustrating for you both.

The next time your child refuses a new food, instead of simply taking it away, try changing the ask.

Can they play with it instead?

Play is a lot more fun and a lot easier than eating.

Most importantly, it helps PREPARE your child to eventually eat.

If you’re looking for more tips to help your picky eater, download my FREE tip sheet. Link in bio!

You know I am a sucker for a good quote! "Don't tell me what I am doing wrong. Tell me what I am doing right!" It's even better when you can hang it in your classroom and mean it! This quote applies to how we talk to the students but, I also use it to remind myself how I talk to my staff.

Keeping it positive whenever possible is super important. Positivity is contagious in my opinion so we use it whenever possible!

There’s so much more that I can do, so please don’t define me by my meltdowns. It’s annoying that we keep having to say this but unfortunately we don’t get the recognition and understanding that our amazing minds deserve. We meltdown because our minds are so powerful and sensitive and it’s important to acknowledge that. (And yes this is a bullshit diagram but it gets my point across. Though I can think and write well, I do have dyslexia and struggle with spelling.)
.
Autistics, your meltdowns are not random and they are painful. While there are things you can do, like avoid situations that contains stresses or triggers, avoiding a meltdown forever is like telling an NT they can never engage in small talk again- it will happen at some point. But realizing that your meltdowns are due to your hyper-aware and extremely powerful brain power can help you channel that energy into supporting yourself and being proud of your abilities, rather than fearing for yourself and living in anxiety of disappointing others.
.
Meltdowns unlike tantrums, are reactionary and not intentional. It’s important your treat yourself with respect and remember to rest and care for yourself often- that is the best way to avoid meltdowns, but also to start understanding what your Autistic mind is fully capable of when it’s not being manipulated to meet a non-Autistic standard.

The majority of people who are aware of autism see it as unfortunate and believe those who are autistic and their families suffer. Even many parents take on this outlook going as far as grieving. The world sees charities raising money for "treatments" and professionals talking about therapies to "fix" autistic behavior.
They are speaking for autistics. But many autistics like me don't want "treatments" or "fixing." Because we aren't sick or broken.
Many of us have been ignored. A whole group of us trying to cry out is being drowned out by those who think they know what we want or need. Listen to Autistics no one else could possibly know our needs better than us and no organizations or charities can speak for us with out us being a part of it. #autisticvoicesmatter

A few months short of their 9th birthday, most kids have a main way of communicating...talking.
When autism comes along it’s not always that simple. Those words might never come, so instead you have to find other ways to communicate, to be understood.
For Tommy it’s felt like those words have been on the tip of his tongue for a few years now. And whilst they may not be flowing like I hoped they would, his understanding of language has rocketed in the meantime.
Initially starting with PECS, Tommy has now progressed into using a combination of methods to communicate. Whether it’s using his Proloquo2go app on his tablet, or responding to verbal instructions I give him, each day he’s grasping it a little more.

A few weeks ago I started using thumbs up or thumbs down for yes or no. A way to try and be a bit clearer in what it is he’s telling me. As you’ll see in this clip he uses that, makaton to say “please” and some vocal attempts at words too.
Most take the ability to communicate for granted, I know I did before becoming a dad. But watching Tommy and Jude try so hard each day to make sense of the world around them and get their needs met has opened my eyes to just how complex it can be.

Finding what works for each person is what’s important. For Tommy, with his increased understanding of language, he tries to communicate more and more. Hopefully those words are just around the corner. But if they’re not, we’ll still find a way to understand each other ❤️

We can help our blossoming babies meet this sensory milestone by utilizing simple tracking exercises with stimuli that are visually appealing to your baby. .

With each passing month the distance our babies can see increases by a few inches. When practicing tracking with a 0-3 month old, it is best to hold the stimulus no more than 12 inches from baby’s face. .

We can help our babies be successful by using a stimulus that is of visual interest to your 0-3 month old.
.

Baby loves peering into Mom’s beautiful eyes! Start by making eye contact with your baby, from no more than a distance of 12 inches. Slowly move your face to the left side for at least 3 seconds, followed by the right.
.

We can also use high/contrast objects or black and white images to gain visual interest at this age. Research shows infants prefer black and white geometric shapes to bright colors. Black and white baby books, mobiles or simply printing or making back and white patterns will all work! Again, hold the image no more than 12 inches from baby’s face and slowly move the object from side to side. .

All babies blossom at their own rate. Speak with your pediatrician if you are concerned about your baby’s development. Research shows the earliest therapy is the most effect therapy. If your baby has not met development milestones, early intervention may be important to help your child reach their best possible outcome. .

What ways do you target visual tracking with your blossoming baby?

So recently I finished my undergrad thesis, where I researched aspects of brain development and the relationship to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)! 🧠🥽
▪
One of my projects entailed me working with neural stem cells or NSCs and that's what you're looking at! 👀 Yes, these are live, healthy cells growing in a petri dish! 😦🔬
▪
What are NSCs? ➡ They are self-renewing, multipotent cells which is the scientific way of saying these cells have the capability to differentiate into (or form) any type of brain cell if exposed to the correct environment/conditions. Interestingly, this is what happens in early brain development! 🧠
▪
What did I do with NSCs? ➡ I differentiated them into neurons and used them for a series of experiments for my project! 👩🏾‍🔬

So recently I finished my undergrad thesis, where I researched aspects of brain development and the relationship to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)! 🧠🥽 ▪ One of my projects entailed me working with neural stem cells or NSCs and that's what you're looking at! 👀 Yes, these are live, healthy cells growing in a petri dish! 😦🔬 ▪ What are NSCs? ➡ They are self-renewing, multipotent cells which is the scientific way of saying these cells have the capability to differentiate into (or form) any type of brain cell if exposed to the correct environment/conditions. Interestingly, this is what happens in early brain development! 🧠 ▪ What did I do with NSCs? ➡ I differentiated them into neurons and used them for a series of experiments for my project! 👩🏾‍🔬 . . . #neuroscience #neuroscienceresearch #ASD #autism #autismspectrumdisorder #autismresearch #neuroscientist #researchlife #stemcells #stemcellresearch #STEMoutreach #STEM #STEMeducation #steminist #womeninscience #scienceisfun #sciencegram #research #laboratorylife #lablife 🔬 #studygram #biologystudent #scicomm #scientist #scientistsofinstagram #thisiswhatascientistlookslike - 1 hour ago
