“‘We love Jane Austen because her characters, as sparkling as they are, are no better and no worse than us. They’re so eminently, so completely, human. I, for one, find it greatly consoling that she had us all figured out.’”
-Natalie Jenner, The Jane Austen Society (uncorrected ARC)
5/5 ⭐️ for The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner
Thank you to @stmartinspress for a digital ARC of #thejaneaustensociety through @netgalley ! As the book releases today, Happy Pub Day too!
As a huge fan of Jane Austen, I was so excited to read this book about the foundation of the Jane Austen Society and Jane Austen House Museum in Chawton, especially as I had the privilege of visiting it myself while in England last year. Because of IG’s caption length limit, I’ll spare you my long-winded excitement and only give an overview of my thoughts here; a full video review is linked in my bio. ~
Given my love for Jane Austen (and books about books in general), I so dearly wanted to love this book and, before the same reasons, I did indeed love it! The Jane Austen Society is about a group of very different people brought together by their love for Jane Austen and by the grief as well; each member of the fledgling society has experienced some kind of loss, tragedy, or trauma. Additionally, many of them have lived through not 1, but both, world wars. The Society becomes a way to not only to preserve Austen’s legacy, but to discover how to do more than just survive. I loved so many of the character, and their relationships are just beautiful. Poignant, tender, and sometimes heartbreaking, I believe The Jane Austen Society is a must-read for Austen fans and highly recommend it! Pick up your copy today💕
***TW: grief and loss of loved ones (suicide, miscarriage, and war/combat are specifically mentioned), drug use as a coping mechanism, and sexual assault.
#cozyascanbee Day 26: props inspired by the book (I complimented The Jane Austen Society with a matching blue teacup that I got in London!)
