Have you ever been wrapped in so much light yours fades away?
We all want to shine, right? Be the best, the prettiest, strongest, etc.… that seems natural, but what if we are going about it wrong? We (westerners) live in a society that is extremely individualized. Parts of that are good, like many personal advancements, but the bad is how we seem to omit the truth that we are human, and thus limited. Alone, we can only shine so bright. But together, what are the limits?
After traveling to cultures that have more of a group mentality, I've witnessed how strong even a basic family unit can be. The world can be crashing around them, and they stay consistent, but how often have you seen an individual crumble because of one small change? When you stand alone, you’re fragile.
In the west, we have placed the individual before all else, the “you do you” mentality, and it makes me wonder if in our pursuit of self-improvement, we’re just becoming lonely…I’m not saying self-help is bad, just maybe the best self you can be is with someone, or something else. Family, a movement, religion…
So instead of asking, “how do I shine?” maybe the question should be, “what could shine upon me so bright, mine will disappear?” - 4 hours ago
