Let this be a word of reason to the folks who are using this time to say “the whites protesting for quarantine to end weren’t violent, looting, or “thugs” (as the hate-mongering baboon has perpetuated) so it’s okay for their protests and wrong for black people & allies to riot”
Or more seemingly innocuous.. “all lives matter”
Or even MORE seemingly innocuous: silence
Your time is up,
The time for reform is now.
As a white woman, I was born into the privilege of being able to walk around without the color of my skin putting me in danger.
I will never know first-hand what racial injustice and oppression feel like, but my heart aches knowing that some of the people I love most in this world have, and still do in 2020. My privilege does not excuse silence, very much the opposite.
Watching what has happened to innocent black men and women like #georgefloyd #ahmaudarbery #breonnataylor and COUNTLESS others in this country makes me physically ill. So angry my hands shake. So disconnected from my country and the people of my own race that I question myself & my reality. So fearful of when (and if) racial injustice will end that I’m nauseous just thinking about systemic oppression continuing.
We’re so afraid of rejection,
Of being wrong,
Of being corrected,
Of losing power & privilege
That we let this evil continue.
We let it go uncorrected.
We look away or stay silent.
I vow to use the privilege of my skin color as a vessel & an amplifying agent to the voices of those who have been silenced; to my black brothers and sisters who have sat back and been stripped of basic human rights for too long, please know I stand here ready to be corrected and educated along the way - so long as it means aiding you with love and unity in this fight.
Discomfort, fear, and indifference are no longer an excuse, my friends.
We (on the side of fighting for basic human rights) are here to welcome you with open arms to join us in speaking out & standing up for the cause.
There are resources, there are phone numbers, there are actionable steps. What there isn’t any of is excuses.
The time for change is now.
The moment of truth is now.
