People of African descent in America are currently a landless people. A lot of us did not choose to come here or immigrate — we were brought as part of a human trafficking/ sex trafficking transcontinental slave trade industry — we were here before America became a country and at the inception of America were considered 3/5ths a person for tax purposes. Land ownership is the foundation of generational wealth and we were dispossessed, stolen from, intimidated and prevented from owning land. In 2019, black people only own 1% of the rural land in the country. There were more black rural land owners in 1890 than now — and that’s not because everybody has left the rural areas. Tons of rural land is now owned by developers, trusts and families that use it as equity or as income — and 99% of those are not black. We need to address this issue..
