The recommended amount of vitamin D for children and adults 9 years to 70 years old is 600 IU per day (IU stands for international units and is used to measure potency).

It’s actually pretty hard to get enough vitamin D from your diet because not too many foods have vitamin D. The most common natural sources are fatty fish and egg yolks. This makes it especially hard if you are a vegetarian because mushrooms are the only good plant source of vitamin D (but, mushrooms produce vitamin D2 and animals produce D3 – more on this to come!)

Here is a small list of foods with the highest amounts of Vitamin D. For example, to get enough Vitamin D from food sources you would need to eat about 75 grams of salmon, tuna or sardines every day which is a lot (and eating fish every day can come with other negative consequences). Also, the amount of vitamin D can also vary if the fish is farmed or fresh – fresh is always better if you have a choice!

Because there are not too many natural food sources, Health Canada requires milk and margarine to fortify their products with vitamin D. And honestly, who eats margarine these days? So if you are milk lover, you would need to drink multiple glasses of milk a day to reach your dietary requirements (like 6?!). Not only is that hard for a lot of people, milk is also another complex subject with allergies, environmental impact, quality, etc.

Some goat and soy milks are fortified – so check the labels (again, you would need to drink a lot)! Cheese and yogurt can be made with vitamin D-fortified milk but the final product does not have as much vitamin D as fluid milk alone. Again check the labels to see if you get enough!

This week in class we've been working towards Leg Pull Front. Fantastic for the strength of our spinal stabilisers, hip extensors and our shoulder stabilisation. Or put more simply our tummies, buttocks and upper body strength!

Did you realise that this exercise, similar to Plank, is also great for your bones? Bones are living tissue and by using gravity and our body weight we are able to promote growth of new bone tissue in order to make them stronger.

Skin Glowing Porridge with Collagen | This Goldilocks' porridge is JUST right 😋⠀

Ingredients⠀
- 1 cup walnuts, soaked overnight⠀
- 1/2 cup pecans, soaked overnight⠀
- 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut⠀
- 1 cup coconut milk⠀
- 1/2 cup blueberries, divided⠀
- 1 t vanilla extract⠀
- 2 T maple syrup⠀
- 1 T collagen powder⠀
- 1/2 t dark chocolate shavings⠀
⠀
Instructions⠀
1. Remove the walnuts and pecans from soaking water. Discard the water. In a food processor, pulse the walnuts, pecans, and shredded coconut until crumbly, about 20 to 30 seconds.⠀
2. In a medium saucepan, combine the nut mixture, coconut milk, half of the blueberries, vanilla extract, and maple syrup. Bring to a boil.⠀
3. Reduce the heat and simmer over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring often.⠀
4. Remove from the heat and stir in collagen until well combined.⠀
5. Divide the porridge between two bowls. Top with the shaved dark chocolate and remaining blueberries.⠀
