WORKOUT WEDNESDAY! - THE HINGE!

Let's discuss about the hinge!
-
This is one of the 6 foundational movements that everyone should perform (Other 5 being the squat, lunge, push, pull and carry!).
-
The hinge is also the movement pattern needed to perform the DEAD-LIFT!
-
Often, many are struggling with the dead-lift because the movement just doesn't feel right.
-
Before focusing on the lats having to be engaged and keeping the back flat, one must focus on establishing a strong and correct hinge posture.
-
On the left, my client was struggling with the dead-lift.
-
We can see her hinge is established but her chest is not pointed up towards the ceiling.
-
We got her to emphasize her chest towards the ceiling and also got her to utilize her lats by protecting and shielding off her armpits.
-
The result from these two cueings was the picture on the right.
-
Clearly, a much better and stronger posture!
-
How to hinge with 3 mental cues?
-
1. Imagine your hips are in a square box and the trick is to push you butt behind the box while keeping your knees within the box and only slightly bent.
-
2. Keep the chest up to maintain neutral alignment of the spine.
-
3. The coming up portion of the hinge will have you pushing you hips forward slightly and you "showing off your belt" at the top to utilize the glutes!

So remember to HINGE and not SQUAT the next time you dead-lift!

It’s the middle of the week.  The weekend is so close I can smell it.  And y’all, I need it.  This week has been a lot so far.  I need an actual vacay, but for now, the promise of the weekend will do. ⁣

When training glutes it’s super important and helpful for growth to begin your workouts with a quick warmup, this will get your blood flowing and muscles firing. We often sit the majority of the day so it’s important to ‘wake up’ the muscles so to speak. You do not need to do all of these, but here are some ideas to chose from. My warmup usually takes 5-10 minutes. 😇 -

SISSY SQUATS TO HELP YOUR 🍑

🤔 “If you can’t activate your butt you might just need to stretch your hip flexors” - a common statement from personal trainers. It’s not quite that simple though.
.
❌ Strong glutes create strong hips, which combine with the core to hold your entire body together. Yes, tightness on the front of the hip can hinder the ability for the glutes to do their job, which is where hip flexor stretches come in. But the problem with this? Your hip flexors aren’t the only muscles on the front of the hip.
.
💡Your quads act as knee extensors AND hip flexors. If you’re trying to reduce tension on the front of the hip, we should attack both muscle groups. We also know that eccentric strength exercises are more efficient than static stretching. Put these two pieces of information together, and the result is the beautiful exercise you see here.

💪🏽 The sissy squat is no joke. Placing the quad on stretch at both the hip AND the knee lengthens it to a degree that it rarely gets to. Strengthen this position and your quads will be much more comfortable when lengthened (the definition of mobility), helping facilitate a strong glute contraction when trying to extend your hips.

🤓I know I just threw a ton of information at you so here’s the TLDR version: do more sissy squats. Your hips will function better, your quads will get way stronger, and your whole body will feel and function better.
