Charles T. Gaither was a mechanical genius. As Pressmen for the Youngstown Vindicator, he and Frank Hubler invented a process for photo engraving images for printing. The Vindicator became the first newspaper to use the technique in 1893.
Gaither later engineered two automobiles, the Fredonia and the Mahoning. He designed a unique air-cooled engine that powered the Mahoning cars, and a one-cylinder engine that enabled the Fredonia Runabouts to go 40 miles per hour. Two Fredonias took top honors at a 500-mile reliability run from New York City to Boston in 1902. This wheel is from a Youngstown-built Fredonia automobile.
The MAHONING VALLEY artiFACTS Series is curated by Jessica Trickett, MVHS Collections Manager.
