Our Mystery Parcels for Celia Pym's first ZOOM class with Loop.
I spent today winding off beautiful little cakes of yarns and twisted threads that included @jamiesonsofshetland Sprindrift, @itoyarn Sensai Silk Mohair, @spincycle_yarns Dyed in the Wool, @maisonsajouofficiel St Pierre twists of thread and various other bits.
It was great fun to see the pile of mini yarn cakes growing and growing as I watched Netflix ("Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker" which I loved ) and then popping different ones into our small project bags with a pack of @prym.consumer darning needles to make up our mystery scrap bundles.
I can't wait to send them all out. ♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎ This is of course because we can not have our scheduled workshops in the shop for now, so it will be happening over on ZOOM with Celia on Saturday April 18th from 2-4:30.
We might have a few places available, so if you would like to take part (UK only for this one as we can't send out the parcels further this time, we hope you understand) please email the shop at shop@loopknitting.com with your name, phone number and email and we will get in touch with you by Tuesday if there are some places.
The London lockdown is making us think of different ways to both stay connected with you and offer bits of joy to look forward to. If you join the online class (zoom is very easy, we promise!) @celiapym will also be sending out class material to you with more information and top tips of things you can use from around the house.
You can see a fuller description over on our website in the embroidery + textile classes section. It should be a great workshop, just different, as we continue to navigate things as they are right now. xx

Wonderful workshop with darning enchantress @celiapym organised by @storeprojects & @coaldropsyard on Friday. It was great to see what everyone else in the class was hoping to fix! We learnt about how you might repair different garments areas and why garments made using animal or plant fibres might need a different kind of techniques and threads. Also about how working with threads that match or completely mismatch your garments and to find the beauty in the fixing! Here is my attempt at darning this electric vermillion @jaegerofficial cashmere sweater of my sisters'🧶 ...next on my list will be some visible darning in blue on a burgundy jumper. Check out #celiapym for more inspiration! Feeling very @fash_rev ready after this!#stayathome

During a Mending workshop by @celiapym in September last year, participants explored textile repair on knitted and wool clothing. Considering the tenderness and care of mending, the aim of the workshop was to practice mending techniques on knit. ⠀
Participants learned and developed skills in woven and fake ‘knitted’ darning. Repairing sweaters, socks and wool accessories. ⠀
⠀
Celia Pym is an artist living and working in London, most recently her work has been included in exhibitions Woman’s Hour Craft Prize, V&A Museum and Loewe Craft Prize, COAM, Madrid and 21_21, Tokyo. Celia Pym has been exploring mending since 2007 with extensive experience of small everyday holes, at heels, elbows, in pockets as well as working on more dramatic damage, from water damage, animal nesting and moths issues. Celia’s interests are around the evidence of damage – through repair you look closely at where garments and cloth have got worn down and thin. In clothing this wearing is often to do with use and how the body moves. Celia says “I like that darning is often small acts of care and paying attention to where things fray and wear out.”⠀

Darning and mending - two things I never feel like tackling but now I’m inspired! Tnx to @looplondonloves ⬇️
Repost from @looplondonloves

Our resident Queen of Darning and beautiful friend @celiapym posted this and we think it’s an inspiration - done using @jamiesonsofshetland Spindrift, it’s pure beauty.
It’s one kind of skill + craft that can bring you some joy these days, so much so that you’ll be hunting through your woollens to see what needs to be darned or visibly mended like this.
In the coming weeks we’re working with Celia on virtual workshops where we will send out little parcels of materials for those taking part. If you have already booked on one of our workshops with Celia for the next few months we’ll be getting in touch with you this week.
I love seeing how we’re all trying to adapt and find new ways of connecting and being creative in these extraordinary times.
Embroidery threads and tools ( needles and darning mushrooms) are in our haberdashery section online and any thin woolly yarn is also terrific for this such as @isageryarn ‘Highland’ or ‘Alpaca 1’ and @itoyarn ‘Sensai’. All at Loop in our online shop.
There is also a great podcast on our blog you can listen to (while stitching!) with @hikaru_noguchi_design @rachaelmatthews1174 + @celiapym all discussing the act and process of mending both practically and creatively. 🦋

Here is the repost of Celia’s original post:
“Mending from Monday. Socks belong to @debbiesmyth originally mended by me in pink for @toast Mend Project 2019, then worn and got fresh holes which were mended in orange by Debbie end of 2019, more new holes in 2020, they came back to me and were mended some more in paler pink and coral.”
Thank you Celia! 🙏🏼

I’ve found a hole 😧on my favorite go to jumper this morning. I recently found “the datning artist” @celiapym. (Why didn’t I know about her before??)I am so struck by her work that I’ll try darning the jumper myself. How do I dare? Will I save my jumper or ruin it?? I’m excited and scared at the same time.
I’ve never spend this much time at home in my life. Social distancing makes me go back to the basic...

EDIT:
Our online shop is now closed for the next 2-3 weeks for the safety of my staff and to help ‘flatten the curve’. We’ll see you all again soon. 🙌🏼

The socks have evolved. Initially mended by @celiapym in pink (see previous post) for a Mend project by @toast last year•
Upon being returned to me, I was on maternity leave & lived in these socks...wearing them around the house a lot, & they began to thin again in places. I decided to reinforce some of the mends with some of my own darning in orange•
Fast forward to couple of months ago. Celia contacted me again as @toast were planning to do a Mend Project launch in NYC. The socks had developed a couple of extra holes ( my love if these socks means I wear them constantly about the house.... my slipper socks) •
Celia offered to carry out further mends on the socks ahead of their trip to NYC; which you can see here
The launch has since been postponed due to the Covid-19 crisis..... but the socks are mended, ready & waiting for their trip•
Scroll to see the darning journey these socks have been on•

#mendmarch by @visiblemend day 11: moth

This is a difficult prompt for me as - believe it or not - I never experienced moth holes in my mending life! I have lavender and cederwood in my closet and my wool stash and so far seem to have been immensely lucky. Touch wood! 🤞 So I thought I take the opportunity to show you the work of my #mendingheroine when it comes to #mothholes which is @celiapym. Here is the very famous example of her “hope’s sweater” mend that is always stunning for me. I have taken the liberty to take the picture from one of my favourite books called Slow Stitch (swipe right for the cover) by Claire Wellesley-Smith @cwellesleysmith which I totally recommend to every fellow stitcher! I hope she doesn’t mind I borrowed her picture! 🥰🙋🏻 #mending #slowstitching #slowfashion #menddontspend #repairingiscaring #visiblemending #handstitching #celiapym #darning #onestitchatatime

I fully appreciates the irony that yesterday I spent International Women's Day at a class in mending... Having said, it was a wonderful class given by #celiapym at the fabulous #loopknitting . I am registered for Celia's darning class but not until September... I guess that gives the moths 6 more months to create materials for that workshop. As for the jeans, I am wearing them today. 😃

Such a wonderful day with @nickitarr at a workshop with the inspirational @celiapym at Loop @looplondonloves .We learned how to darn but talked about about so much more; damage, rescue, repair, care and value. I spent yesterday obsessed with rescuing a beloved soft whisp of a grey cardigan worn to thin shreds in places and some hand knit socks. Quite hoping the moths come back to munch some knits so I can mend some more! #visiblemending #celiapym #darning #darningmushroom

Yesterday I spent the most wonderful day at one of my favourite places, Loop @looplondonloves with the very lovely Celia @celiapym at her darning and mending workshop. We brought various holey (!) garments and listened to and learnt lots of Celia tips and techniques. The moth ridden scarf I started work on had far too many holes to show, as it looked like I hardly did anything, so I I’ll show one that I’ve worked on today, in between other Sunday things and finished! Thank you Celia, it was soooooo lovely to meet you and fascinating to hear how you started your darning journey, learn so much from you and chat away with such a lovely group of ladies. #darning #mending #slowstitching #pinksandblues #celiapym #looplondon #workshop #mendyourclothes
