"Participating in a start-up weekend changed my life. It taught me you can create your own opportunities, be successful, & do it from where you are. I also realised I could have a meaningful impact.
Jump forward & I now work from the Innovation Centre as a social entrepreneur empowering others.
Initially, I learned to identify a problem, explore solutions & commercialise it. As a young Mum, I applied this to my own life - developing a platform with wellbeing resources for FIFO workers & their families. It led to helping more people than I ever imagined, including myself.
I do love that more women are smashing stereotypes. What I want to see is more diversity in business, from age, gender, cultural & all types of perspectives. Embrace diversity & the wealth of knowledge that can be shared.
I always say to people – an idea is just an idea until you do something with it. By sharing & attending events like start-up weekends, you can build confidence in taking the smallest step & turn ideas into reality.
At the same time, you don't have to know everything. That's the power of collaborating & sharing. Ask for help, surround yourself with smart people, give back & volunteer where you can.
When I finished school, success was a degree & leaving the region to pursue opportunities with corporates. But education & success can mean something different to each person. The world is changing, & we need to futureproof, not limit ourselves.
If you find yourself in a meeting or event where you are not either learning or providing value – then move to somewhere you are. Choose to have meaning in your life."
