Jon has been inspiring me by using his social media to help motivate himself to do what he loves (he loves movement and has been posting the coolest movement workouts! Check him out @jon.ritter ). I decided I would try to do the same, but with what I love: early childhood development.
We do lots of play with Leo, but I have been getting pretty lazy lately and just setting him up to do the same stuff every day. While this isn't a problem exactly, I figure I spent all this money on a degree and I know how to plan intentional activities to promote development😅. So, once a week, I will plan, implement, and post an enrichment activity. It really is mostly for my accountability, but it at least means a minimum of weekly pictures of my little man for your viewing pleasure 😄. Sensory bags are not really new for Leo since I used them frequently during tummy time, but they were always big ones taped to the floor. I decided to make smaller ones that he could pick up and practice fine motor skills. I was going to put a random mixture in each bag, but realized that I would be missing out on a developmentally appropriate way to introduce categorization (early math skill). So, each bag has a type of item with an increasingly dense liquid: tinsel with oil and water, buttons with gel, and 'jewels' with corn syrup.
Results: Leo was super engaged in this activity. He spent about 2 minutes just squeezing them before he even put them in his mouth! Then he of course loved chewing on them and I regretted my decision to not go buy duct tape to seal all of the edges. I only let him play with them for about 10 minutes (closely supervised) before I set them aside until I can tape them better. However, I think that they will be a frequently used activity once I trust their durability more.
I have a much messier activity planned for next week (I LOVE me some messy sensory play!!) that is not as vetted as this one, so we shall see if it is as successful 🧐. #childdevelopment #infantactivities #sensorybags #sensoryplay #enrichmentactivity - 17 minutes ago
