The *Department of Philosophy, Hindu College*, is delighted to be hosting *Aakash Singh Rathore* as part of it's Samvād series of lectures. Prof. Rathore is a philosopher of international repute, author of eight books,regular contributor to international magazines with bylines in The Times of India, Firstpost, Huffington Post, Scroll.in. He is also India’s number 3 Ironman triathlete, and has finished five gruelling Ironman Triathlons, known as the world’s most difficult one-day sporting event. ​

I generally shred all of my journals but I found one from 16 years ago where I did an experiment after reading Paul Ekman's "Emotions Revealed". I wanted to record moment-to-moment every emotion that I was feeling throughout the day. The experiment lasted through the summer. Looking back on it now I discovered a few things: One, I was really angry a lot of the time. Another one was that I had a lot of legitimate things to be very angry about. And another was that I learned lessons at that time which didn't take root until years and years later. And a final and most gratifying thing to learn was that I am a lot more emotionally stable now than I was 16 years ago. #grateful #gratefulheart #gratitude #paulekman #emotions #cognitivescience #cogsci

TESTOSTERONE, SUPPLEMENTS, AND BRAIN FUNCTION
This is a particularly favorite topic of mine, as I was involved in research a few years ago with the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. We published a paper that demonstrated a correlation between brain injury and low testosterone by measuring testosterone levels in blood, urine, and saliva, and then correlating that to our functional MRI (fMRI) scans of recently injured brains. Our goal was to try to implement testosterone rehabilitation therapy to try and see if we could effectively, counteract the result of the brain injury. Why is this important? We must understand that roughly 95% of testosterone is produced in the male testes, HOWEVER, this is regulated by the PITUITARY GLAND in the brain. The remainder is produced by the adrenal gland. There are two types of testosterone in the body: sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin (both of which circulate in the blood). It’s also important to note that testosterone itself, has very little effects on the body. Instead, it is a precursor to dihydrotestosterone (DHT); a much stronger “ANDROGEN” (medical term for sex hormone). We must also understand that testosterone has a sweet spot.  Too little testosterone (HYPOGONADISM) is just as bad as too much (HYPERGONADISM), when it comes to healthy male brain function. Too little testosterone can cause fatigue, lethargy, difficulty concentrating, problems with visual spatial abilities, and mood disorders. It is, in fact, an ANXIOLYTIC (meaning, it can protect against mood symptoms). Memory can also be severely impacted by low testosterone levels. Conversely, too much testosterone can actually impair judgment, decision making, and insight, while causing disturbances in aggressive personality and attention. Now…there is a caveat to the this: it is age dependent. We actually have new research that suggests increasing testosterone levels in OLDER AGE can prevent depression, dementia, and even stroke. But remember, these are individuals who, because of their age, have significantly lower levels.

Recientemente inicié una pasantía, o fellowship, en un instituto de investigación en Estados Unidos. Hacer una pasantía implica dedicarse exhaustivamente, y con toda la responsabilidad del caso, a investigar el tema propuesto. Esto quiere decir, entre otras cosas, que debo estar mucho tiempo leyendo textos con lenguaje más técnico y con otro tipo de abordajes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Uno de mis propósitos para estos meses entonces es no abandonar mi lista de lectura, o al menos no descuidarla; sin desconocer que libros interesantes pueden aparecer en el camino. La semana pasada buscaba en nuestra biblioteca un libro que necesitaba para uno de los capítulos que trabajo y me topé con este en el pabellón de recomendados. Fue escrito por dos científicos cognitivos y publicado en 2017.

Recientemente inicié una pasantía, o fellowship, en un instituto de investigación en Estados Unidos. Hacer una pasantía implica dedicarse exhaustivamente, y con toda la responsabilidad del caso, a investigar el tema propuesto. Esto quiere decir, entre otras cosas, que debo estar mucho tiempo leyendo textos con lenguaje más técnico y con otro tipo de abordajes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Uno de mis propósitos para estos meses entonces es no abandonar mi lista de lectura, o al menos no descuidarla; sin desconocer que libros interesantes pueden aparecer en el camino. La semana pasada buscaba en nuestra biblioteca un libro que necesitaba para uno de los capítulos que trabajo y me topé con este en el pabellón de recomendados.
