Terrence McKenna was one of the most peculiar individuals in modern history. An ethnobotanist, author, academic and fervent explorer of the realm of psychedelics, he had a peculiar relationship with language and emotions.
He hosted endless seminars and workshops (a lot of which can be found online) during which he could easily talk for 10 hours straight. His fascination with language, and in particular the language of emotions, proved to be an endless source of inspiration. He believed that one day, our language would transcend the current form in which uttered words and sentences necessarily pass through a subjective interface, both between formation and utterance in the sender and between the hearing and processing of the recipient, and transform from being spoken and understood subjectively to being seen and beheld unambiguously.
In order to progress the evolution of language, he insisted, we’d need to evolve the language we employ to describe and communicate our own emotions first. Only then we can collectively ascend to the level of communication necessary to solve the wicked problems that pervade our society.
Our emotions color everything. Our thoughts, our mood, our judgements and predictions, our ability to collaborate and solve difficult problems. Although we can be aware of this general fact, it has now been confirmed in multiple studies that we are often unaware of it when it is actually happening. This is an important part of why it is our mission to contribute to a more emotionally intelligent world.
