LINKING YOUR CHEST TO BAR

A staple in the CrossFit world, this skill, although not absolutely necessary, is useful for executing high volume pull-ups.

DISCLAIMER: These progressions assume you are proficient at kipping. The drills focus on linking the reps.

VIDEO 1 - Can you hold your chin over the bar for 20s? Before we get into these drills, it is important to make sure you have the prerequisite strength. If you can’t hold this for 20s, I recommend you work on your strength first, so that your shoulders are resilient enough to sling your body around on a bar.

VIDEO 2 - Can you do 5 strict chest to bar pull-ups? Continuing from the previous video, having adequate strength will not only keep your shoulders safe, it will also allow you to do the following drills without any limitations.

VIDEO 3 - DRILL 1: FLOOR KIPPING C2B. This drill is close to the floor, so that you have maximum control. It allows you to get a “feel” for the movement without fatiguing out your arms. Set the bar up just above your eyeballs. Swing your hips through and back with straight arms, then use your legs to pop your hips and make contact with the bar before you reset for the next rep.

VIDEO 4 - DRILL 2: KIPPING C2B SINGLES. This video assumes you can already kip, so need to go over those details. This drill allows you to get a feel for the pull necessary to get your chest all the way to the bar.

VIDEO 5 - DRILL 3: KIPPING C2B BANDED + HOLD. One of the biggest errors I see when athletes are trying to learn this skill is a lack of patience once the chest has touched the bar. NO NEED TO RUSH! This drill forces you to take a chill pill at the top (this is why you need that 20s chest over bar hold)

VIDEO 6 - KIPPING CHEST TO BAR. Here’s the deal. There is no secret sauce to these skills. IF YOU HAVE ADEQUATE STRENGTH, you should be able to move through these drills with relative ease and a fairly high success rate. If you CAN NOT meet the prerequisites, I suggest you incorporate more specific strength work into your programming.

Rope climbs require lots of grip strength and a good amount of coordination.  It’s important to be efficient with your feet so you can preserve your grip. I like to wrap the rope under my right foot and secure it by pinching it between the top of The right foot and bottom of my left foot. After hundreds of reps I’m finally okay at it. 
Also get some shoes that can handle anything, otherwise you’ll be looking for a new pair soon.
