This was the first kid I photographed at the fountain splash pad. He'd obviously been there a little while . . . clothes and boots were soaked. He was fascinated with the jet streams, seemed to enjoy testing the pressure with his boots.
Curiosity is a wonderful thing to watch in children. The focus they have while learning something new, while experiencing something for the first time, is often lost as we age. We get comfortable. For many, our knowledge base is sufficient for our daily interactions and activities so we see no need to explore and further develop ourselves. For others, curiosity is the key to happiness.
There are many theories why we lose that desire, and why some of us are motivated to seek the academic and emotional rewards of curiosity. I find it easier to read articles than books, but I do enjoy a deep dive into the pages sometimes. I also enjoy a documentary or podcast when its available. I'd even say that verbal discussions, not something I initiate, have been extremely effective in my overall growth as a human. Inquisitive thinking will slow me down at times, but I'm happy to reflect upon and dissect my thoughts, understand the situation around me, and eventually learn.
Photography stimulates my curiosity. It has tapped into the creative side of my personality. It has encouraged me to research places, to learn about different cultures, to understand perspectives and personal motivations, and to type up these photo descriptions.
Be curious. Approach life with a beginners mind. Seek understanding. Be a child. Be curious.
