Your dog may not be used to being home all day, and while at first this might seem like all of their Christmases have come at once we must be careful not to mess them around too much.
We don’t want our dogs to become over dependant on us and not be able to cope with us leaving the home when we go back to work. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy being around them but some healthy degrees of separation at different times of the day may help everyone down the track.
Practicing leaving them in their ‘safe place’ with enrichment while you work on the computer (or watch Netflix. No judgment) for a couple of hours during the day can help this. If your dog can’t go that long, then leave them for what they can with something to occupy them and gradually build this duration up.
It also goes a long way to ensuring they get enough sleep and rest. They may have been used to not being disturbed throughout the day, and while you’re home, you’re a stimulant. So ensuring your dog gets enough rest and sleep through this time can go a long way to keeping their social and tolerant personalities as you know them. It can often take around three months before you see the effects of sleep deprivation in their mood... so get on top of it sooner before it creeps up on you.
