While depression is absolutely real, there are many ways depression lies to us and keeps us in a cycle of hopelessness, numbness, and shame.
Depression tells us the future is worse than it can be, that we are much less able to recover than we really are, and we soon confuse this chapter with the entire story.
If you got to check out my recent stories I gave some pieces of support and encouragement, not just as someone who studies depression but has been there personally.
Firstly, depression and sadness are not the same things. Sadness is the natural reaction to life's circumstances where we feel disappointed, let go of, or hurt. We feel it for a while and then it kind of goes away and we move on.
While sadness is a part of depression, depression persists for weeks, months, even years for some- and it continues for most of the day, almost every day. You may feel emptiness, hopelessness, or apathetic and numb, where you lose interest in doing the things that you usually enjoy. You may feel a total depletion of energy and any normal task feels impossible to accomplish.
Neurologically, a combination of psychological, social and even physical distress could lead to altering brain function or the normal activity in the brain.
It's easy to remain stuck in this place once you're in it. We're human and it happens and there's no reason to shame yourself for it. It's just as if you were physically sick. You recognize it and understand that you may need to take more time to take care of yourself and tend to your needs and ask for more help in this season.
The good news is that depression is treatable today. There are evidence-based therapeutic interventions that can help get you out of this state. If it's more clinical then some combination of therapy and medication can prove helpful for any period of time that's necessary. Always be advised by a medical professional in this area.
I say all this to say, depression does not have the final say on your life. I fully believe God has in endowed us with tools in addition to his healing grace. You can be on the other side of this and your life is worth it ❤ - 2 hours ago
