I think we have this misunderstanding about what healing and doing the work really is, that it’s all about diving into the wounds.
It wasn’t until we did a unit on trauma in my somatic therapy training* several years ago that I fully understood what the process of doing the work really was.
Before we sat with any trauma in practice sessions, we spent a day and a half of the three-day training just getting resourced. Getting resourced is a practice, and it means to fill up with a felt sense of whatever feels nourishing, like compassion, or love, or a favorite scene in nature, or dancing to a favorite song, or sitting with our strengths...things like this. We do this alone and in community.
The other component of doing the work is developing a conscious understanding of a wounding moment; we bring our witness consciousness to the forefront by slowing down to understand the context, and to learn our relationship to it. *Only when we understand a wounding experience from a compassionate distance can we heal it.* This three-pronged approach to doing the work that I’ve been writing and thinking about for years applies to individuals and families and larger systems of people. I believe that it applies to the current turmoil happening now.
We will heal it, and it is my belief that we will see meaningful change in our lifetimes. But we all (especially those of us new to these issues) need to understand it first to the best of our ability. We can create resource around it, the way a potter builds a bowl, creating the container for a compassionate space within us that we can extend outwards for our black brothers and sisters, who are hurting deeply right now.
Lots more to say on all of this. Stay tuned, and sending extra metta/lovingkindness our this day. -Rebecca
