SYNOPSIS: After the death of one of his friends, a writer recounts a boyhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy.
REVIEW: Up until tonight, it had been years since I had seen Stand by Me. When I first watched it, I remember liking it but coming away feeling like it was slightly overrated. Now, after a much needed rewatch, I think it’s an absolute masterpiece.
Obviously, the best part about Stand by Me is the characters. They are played incredibly well by everyone, but they are fleshed-out to an impressive amount for a movie that clocks in at around the 85 minute mark. They all have their fears, their issues, their insecurities, and their cockiness, but the way this played into their story was beautiful.
The screenplay for Stand by Me is one of the best I have ever seen for a coming-of-age film, and the journey that it took us on was one that I think everyone should watch. This definitely isn’t a film suitable for families, but I think it’s absolutely essential that every teenager watches this film a couple of times before they grow up.
It had some beautiful messages which I think more people need to hear, and not all of them become apparent until the final few minutes. Up until this point, it had been an extremely fun adventure, but then it turned into something which was deeply moving, emotional, and relatable.
I have very little issues with this film. It’s not on the same level as other Stephen King adaptations such as The Shawshank Redemption and The Shining, which is why I can’t give it a perfect score, but it comes pretty damn close.
