Let me tell you about Lexi's new bit. It's a blue alloy Mullen mouth loose ring. I always strive to have my horses in some sort of snaffle/most gentle bit possible. I also believe in training over equipment. She has gone well in a Mullen happy mouth, but if she gets anxious she still grinds the bit which doesn't go over well with that bit. I had tried her in a few other types of snaffles all of which she seemed unhappy in.
This bit is obviously a little stronger than the happy mouth. It's thinner and has a small port (which just alleviates tongue pressure). I chose this in the hopes that it will take less of me to balance her. Lexi can get strong and doesn't have the proper muscle to balance herself. The more unbalanced she becomes the stronger she gets. My core strength is lacking and when she gets off balance she tends to pull me off balance. It takes everything I have to try to ride her some days. By using this bit I'm wanting to be able to use less of my hands and be softer while keeping her from running right through me. I was very pleased with what I got yesterday.
QOTD: what kind of bit do you use and why? - 8 minutes ago
