#SLAYYOURWEEKEND : Dealing with negative #body talk.
Listen, we’ve all been there (myself included). There are things we just don’t love about our physical bodies. That said, it’s bullshit if anyone tells you they talk the “self love” talk all the time. When we have that friend (or friends), however, that constantly want to pick themselves apart (or worse, giving us an excuse to join in), it’s not only crushing our psyche, but not helping ANYONE. In fact, it encourages #bodydysmorphia and other serious #health issues. So, what can we do when our friends start that negative chat? A recent article from @msnbc gives us some great pointers:
1. Validate: Everyone needs and deserves to feel heard. Period. Validate by giving them a hug, actively listening, or asking what you can do to help them work through these feelings.
2. Agree: I know, surprising. You can’t tell them they’re wrong; it won’t help (for example, omg your ____ is so not_____!). Instead, tell them how they feel isn’t wrong, but you’re not going to agree.
3. Gratitude: Ask to change the negative statement into a positive. In fact, I’d love us to try it in the comments, below. I’ll go first: I hate my nose because it’s crooked, I can’t breathe well, and I need surgery for the bump. However, its #lewk makes me distinctly me and I love me as a whole. Your turn.
4. Kindly Move On: You have every right to tell your friend(s) you love them, but negative self talk isn’t your vibe and you’d rather not participate. Set an example; set a precedent. There are so many more fun and positive things to discuss, anyway.
