💥 Truth bomb incoming!
👉🏻 White folks: I know many of us want to do better. But we can’t heal what we can’t feel.
❓If we’re serious about progress, we need to reflect upon our own thoughts and behaviors as they relate to racial biases, privilege as a white person, and white guilt.
🌪 We need to face FEAR. When we carry unhealed fear, we project that fear into others. ⠀⠀
➡️ This creates divisiveness and is why racism is deadly: fear of “other.”
🥀 We need to face GUILT. When we carry unhealed guilt and shame, we deny the part of us that has done something wrong. ⠀⠀
➡️ When we know better we do better. But that starts with recognizing we are not perfect and there is room to grow and learn. ⠀⠀
⚠️ This is why white guilt is dangerous: it keeps us from correcting the wrongs and doing better in the future.
💔 We need to face GRIEF. When we carry unhealed grief, we do not honor the people whose lives were taken, and we do not honor the love we have for our fellow human being. ⠀⠀
➡️ This causes us to treat the martyrs of this movement as less than human so that we don’t have to feel the uncomfortable, painful feelings of loss.
💜 It may feel selfish to take a step back from the news and social media to work on yourself right now, but it’s infinitely more selfish not to do it. Because then you’ll continue the cycle of denial and bypassing that perpetuates the very problem we are facing right now.
🙏🏻 When you heal, others around you heal. Start responding to injustice from a healed place, not from a place of denial and coping. ⠀⠀
💔 It is uncomfortable, and it sucks. You’re having to face icky parts of yourself you don’t want to face. But you got this. And I’m here as a nonjudgmental support should you need it. - 12 minutes ago
