🦄🦄 Exercise Update 🦄🦄

As I get closer to my goal weight, it becomes harder for the weight to come off, so it is really important that I stay focused on both my exercise and my diet ! I like to mix-up my exercise routine to keep me motivated, so last night I played “keep away” with Gator 🐊! I was able to get Gator back each time !  I hope everyone has a good day, and that you take at least a few minutes to do something for yourself !

When resistance training, the "mind-muscle connection" is an important aspect to consider for various training goals. 
Research has indicated that focusing on a specific muscle group or joint movement increases motor unit recruitment (i.e., "increases muscle activity). This type of concentration is also known as an internal focus - since it takes places attention on a spot within the body. Internal focus strategies may be more beneficial when first learning a new movement or to involve as many muscle fibers as possible (i.e., for hypertrophy or muscle growth). On the opposite side, there is an external focus. This occurs when the individual concentrates on a point outside of the body. This type of focus is often used when mastery of a movement occurs and there is a need to increase efficiency or performance of the skill. Previous research has also indicated that lifters are able to lift more weight using an external focus; thus, if the goal is strength, lifters may want to adopt this strategy.

For example, an internal focus during the squat would be to focus on squeezing the glutes during the ascent phase. An external focus would be to "drive the bar away from the floor". It’s still #transformationtuesday right? That’s still a thing in this new weird world? I got greedy and decided to do two transformations (swipe left). Me in gym kit and me in clothes! My before pics are from 2017 when I was over 3 stone heavier, not very happy and not very healthy. Fast forward three years and my life is in a much better place in all ways!

Set a schedule ahead of time and adhere to it. Prioritizing your health and fitness really is more important than ever. Create a space inside your home that is designated for training, or if you live near green space, than get outside for a run or walk.

Granted it’s not the usual way I train, but I train every day for my mental health and for my cardiovascular fitness.

As I am of Indian Origin, a lot of members of my family have passed away with cardiovascular disease so it is even more important for me to exercise daily! 
#
For large parts of last year I didn’t train, I was unhealthy, I was down due to constant injuries, I felt a part of me that was missing. 
#
When I got back into training in January this year, the endorphin rush I felt was incredible. 
#
Everyone trains for different reasons and has different goals! 
#
On lockdown for me, training has been an important part of my routine and my day and also that of my eldest son Gabriel. 
#
When the lockdown is relaxed, I will be opening up outdoor sessions here, in the mean time I am slowly but surely sourcing more kit!

If you're trying to lose weight or improve your health, don't waste your time and effort on another diet. Instead, spend a week keeping track of what you eat to get a clear idea of where you could improve, then choose one healthy eating goal to start working on.

In my experience working with clients, most people will see big benefits from improving on one of these areas:
🥕Eat more vegetables and fruits
📉Reduce added sugars
📉Reduce sodium
🌾Eat more whole grains
🍳Cook more at home
🚰Drink more water
🤸🏻‍♀️Balance your meals

Once you decide on your focus, set a specific, measurable, and achievable goal based on your starting point. If you're only eating one veggie each day, set a goal to make it two. Then, make a detailed plan for achieving that goal.

Once you're consistently achieving that goal, set a slightly bigger goal. Keep building and soon you'll be ready to work on a second focus area, and so on.

NHS Active challenge Day 1 ☀️ If you haven't yet joined the NHS active challenge on Strava, I really encourage you to! Just donate £5 and do any sort of responsible physical activity for at least 10 minutes everyday. My session today was 8 x 1 min hard, 1 min easy, trying to stay between 3:00/km and 3:20/km pace round a local field near where I live.

In the realm of health and wellness a lot of emphasis is placed on exercise, movement and nutrition, and rightfully so. Physical inactivity and sedentary behaviours are a global health problem and contribute to a host of chronic diseases. Overconsumption of nutrient devoid foods is a major contributor to the global obesity epidemic and decreased quality of life. We are undernourished but overfed. 
However, in our pursuits of a healthier lifestyle we often overlook a major component... SLEEP! Quality sleep makes all else possible. 
When we neglect sleep:
- our coping abilities to deal with stressors is diminished
- we have diminished problem solving abilities
- we have decreased energy and power
- we unknowingly move less throughout the day
- we have increased cravings for food
- we have increased impulsivity with our food choices
- our mood and outlook is worsened
- we become more emotionally labile
- we don’t feel physically, mentally or emotionally well!
