In a recent drama I was watching, I heard the term 'middle class' being used for a family.
The family they showed to be middle class was having their breakfast with forks and knives? Nopes wrong.
They didn't have a half torn, half peeled butter packet on the table, they didn't have mismatched pillow covers on the beds, they didn't have ghar ke saarey kaprey on one chair, they didn't have a father going in each room turning off the unnecessary lights and fans, they didn't have a mama with her hair tied into a bun sending off someone for dahi.
Middle class isn't a status, a caste, a class, it's a way of living, it's the name of a lifestyle. Middle class is a mindset that sticks to you, whether you climb up the ladder or slip a little.
You know you're middle class when you have AC but it stays on 26 degrees, might even get switched off by dad in the middle of the night and of course the whole house sleeps in one room. Mattresses on each inch of the room.
You're middle class when your very hardworking dad sends you to an expensive university or college but you're reprimanded for wasting money on cafeteria lunches and a taxi drive back home. Bus main nahin aa saktey nawab ki aulaad?
You're middle class when you have expensive perfumes for dawats and parties only and deodarants for ghar, when you have one formal pyaara sa trouser for outdoors but ghissi hui shalwar for ghar, when you don't understand how in dramas when a wife leaves her husband she starts throwing dress after dress hung in hangers into her suitcase, aisey saleeqay se kon rakhta hai sab kaprey?
You're middle class when ammi has a seperate dinner set for mehmaan, you're supposed to starve but not touch anything till mehmaan leave, you're supposed to nod your head in a polite manner when mehmaan offer a gift or eidi.
