So, I finally watched Kumbalangi Nights and what a beautiful film it is. It is one of the those few films which have aced almost every aspect of the filmmaking process. Be it story, music, cinematography, acting or direction. Each of the facets add immense value to the film.
Kumbalangi Nights is the story about four brothers, who share a love-hate relationship that, on the face of it, seems much like the one that most brothers share. They get into physical fights and never express their feelings for each other verbally. There is a lot between them that is never spoken of until circumstances change. They have to face the past and work towards a better future. The bond between them develops beautifully and it will definitely touch your heart.
The background score and music of the film is exceptional. The theme music is hauntingly beautiful and I cannot get it out of my mind since I watched the film. Malayalam is not a language that I speak or understand, but somehow I felt the music. I had goosebumps even without reading the subtitles to understand what exactly the lyrics meant.
A post on Kumbalangi Nights would be incomplete without mentioning the actors. Shane Nigam and Anna Ben as Bobby and Baby make the most adorable couple. You can't help but fall in love with them. The proposal scene is one of the best scenes in the film. Soubin Shahir, as the oldest brother Saji is so complex. It is one of the most finely written characters in the film. Sreenath Bhasi, as Bonny is another strong character which manages to make your heart melt and Mathew Thomas, as the youngest brother, brings out the feeling of what it is to have a messed up family that you love. And then... there is Fahadh Faasil. His eyes and smile are enough to pull off a dark character like Shammy. It is difficult to get that smile out of my mind.
Kumbalangi Nights is a beautiful family drama that cannot be missed.
