“Water, water, water....There is no shortage of water in the desert but exactly the right amount , a perfect ratio of water to rock, water to sand, insuring that wide free open, generous spacing among plants and animals, homes and towns and cities, which makes the arid West so different from any other part of the nation. There is no lack of water here unless you try to establish a city where no city should be.”
Picking up from the last post....How did a reservoir end up in this desolate and out of the way place in Northern California? This high desert area where water runs scarce!
Well jump back to the year 1889 and meet Mr. Albert L. Shinn who owned the Union Land and Stock Company in that area. Shinn had a brilliant idea to provide irrigation to the eastern Madeline Plains, which lie just south of where we found this blue eyed stallion. The Red Rock Creek feeds this area and by creating a reservoir he could irrigate the Madeline Plains. But as many great ideas go, then and now, lack of funding and other problems ground the project to a halt in 1890.
Eight years later, steps in Henry C. Dodge. The year is 1907 and Dodge made a bid and acquired the Union Land and Stock Company. Shortly after, Dodge formed the Madeline Valley Land & Irrigation Company and in 1909 Dodge Reservoir was complete. But alas, Mr. Dodge’s luck ran out, the same as Peter Lassen, and in 1912 Dodge died during an altercation in Reno, Nevada, leaving his ranch to his two sons. Today, the Dodge Ranch is rumored to have 25,000 acres of hemp!
Thank you for following along on this journey with the blue eyed one and an extra thanks for sharing his story. For your voice is their voice and when this blue eyed boy makes his debut in Wild Lands, Wild Horses his voice will help make a difference in bringing America's wild horses to a greater audience. I won’t reveal the backstory to why he made it in the first episode! You will have to wait! Let’s just say….sometimes you don’t see things until you see things!
