Isn’t it fascinating how crone, when you use the google search engine, ends up with images of what we would deem to be a bad witch. Sort of scary looking, with warts, a large nose and unpleasant facial expressions.
In folklore a crone is an old woman, not necesarily unpleasant or malicious or even ugly. However again the google search’s first display is ugly old woman. As a noun it is derived from the Anglo-French carogne – old North French Charogne, caroigne meaning disagreeable woman, dead flesh.
With stereotypes such at these it makes more sense that in our western society aging and old age is mostly considered something to dread. Something which makes you unpleasant to look at. We celebrate the girl and the mother but not the old wise woman.
To quote from Wikipedia:
The crone is a character in folklore and fairy tales, an old woman. In some stories, she is disagreeable, malicious, or sinister in manner, often with magical or supernatural associations that can make her either helpful or obstructing. The Crone is also an archetypal figure, a Wise Woman. 🖌 artist uncredited, found via namcara. Blogspot.
