Conisbrough Castle -
These are some photos I took when I went to visit Conisbrough Castle last year in April/June time.
The Conisbrough Castle was built around 1170/1180s. Hamelin Plantagenet built the castle on a site that previously had a wooden castle built there. ‘Conisbrough’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘Cyningesburh’ meaning ‘the King’s borough’. The castle was the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott’s most famous novel, Ivanhoe, published in 1819. There is also a pub in Conisbrough called The Ivanhoe.
The castle managed to escape any damage on the Civil War & now it sits as an eye popping & picturesque ruin!
The castle has been depicted by numerous artists & earned fame as a romantic ruin.
Conisbrough, not far from the castle, has the oldest church in the whole of South Yorkshire, St Peter’s Church that has been standing since the 8th century. Conisbrough definitely has an interesting & vast history!
With all that history there are bound to be stories of the paranormal connected to this castle....here’s a few of them to read, let me know what you think?
GREY MONK -
The legend of a Grey Monk is one of the most famous hauntings of the castle. It’s said the apparition is to be seen wandering amongst the ruins at night.
WHITE LADY -
Another infamous story that a lot of locals mention when asked about the castle is that of ‘The White Lady’. The story goes she was stood at the top of the keep when she was sadly pushed to her death.
Residents of Conisbrough have reported when driving past the castle at night, a white light is seen dropping from the top of the keep to the ground & disappearing. Some say it is the White Lady herself dropping to her death over & over again!
Other ghostly going ons that have been reported are phantom footsteps heard around the inside of the castle & strange lights in the Chapel.
