Being able to train with a greater range of motion while maintaining the same weight/reps can also be considered a form of overload. By discussing 2 different lunge variations, today I'd like to share an example of how increasing the range of motion of a lift helps you reach progressive overload.

As you can see on the left side of the video, the range of motion with a traditional lunge is somewhat limited by your posterior leg. Especially individuals with long femurs find that they can't drop down deep with a traditional lunge without their knee slamming the floor. By placing an elevation under the front foot (via a step or thick bumper plate), you allow the knee of your posterior leg to travel down further and you are able to train your leg muscles through a greater range of motion.

Another option for increasing range of motion would be to switch to Bulgarian split squats (in which your rear foot is elevated). But I find that the transition from a traditional lunge to front foot elevated lunges is more manageable for most people. Immediately jumping into Bulgarian split squats tends to result in stability issues for those not familiar with the exercise. So if you struggle with Bulgarian split squats, you can see the front foot-elevated lunge as a good progression between traditional lunges and Bulgarian split squats.

What goals did you achieve this month? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Goal-setting keeps us in a #growthmindset mode! I reviewed my goals last night to monitor my progress because reflection is proven to elevate performance.

Before 2018, I reflected on my goals quarterly but taking the time to sit down each month helps me to:
1) Appreciate the growth process 
2) Modify any prioritize as needed 
3) Review behaviors to celebrate my wins and address areas to improve ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reflection is about understanding why you achieved some things and why you didn’t achieve others to help us develop a #mindset of continuous improvement.

An employer-sponsored retirement savings plan is a good place to start investing especially if they are offering a match AKA free money. The investment options are fewer than if you invest on your own and the fees may be higher but the maximum contribution limit and tax benefits make it worthwhile plus if that's the only way you can invest right now its better than nothing. However when you leave that employer - TAKE YOUR MONEY with you by rolling it over into an IRA.

Some old employers will let you keep your money with them BUT they typically charge higher maintenance fees for people who are no longer employed with them.

Also, many new employers will let you roll your investment portfolio from your previous employer into theirs BUT again, you’ll have limited options and higher fees. Yes, you can participate in your new employers plan but think carefully before rolling your prior portfolio in there.

An IRA will give you access to invest in the entire stock market and if you go the index fund route, you’ll save a ton of money on fees (Over the long term those fees can sum up to hundreds of thousands of dollars or more depending on the portfolio size). As with every investment - do your research before you invest.

It's a wonder I get anything done around here. HOW STINKIN CUTE IS HE?!?🐢😍🥰 Spring is right around the corner, and Kublai and I are excited for many more sunshiny adventures.

Buuuuuuuuut that means I've got to stay busy now. #goals🔥 I get asked a lot how I'm doing with two projects at once. Honestly, it's been harder than I thought it would but not impossible. 📚💪 I make myself write Nav'Aria 3 for an hour or two before getting sucked into query world with the memoir. I usually can write about 1500 words an hour sooooo I'm making progress, and am reallllllllly excited for the EPIC conclusion of Nav'Aria. I'm also super intrigued by the memoir and it's future (way different than my experiences with writing/publishing fantasy). More than anything, I'm learning a ton. I'm also staying consistent with my workouts and prepping for my first 10k.😅🏃‍♀️

Yesterday I heard @trentshelton mention something that totally summed up where I'm at with my 2020 goals, lifestyle, dreams, and routine. He said: "A goal is something you reach. A standard is something you live by." 🔥🔥🤯🤩💪

I loved that simple truth. And in the context of my year, despite my incredibly adorable tortoise, I'm still getting things done.😉 I'm working on my mental and physical strength with discipline and consistency. Write and Run. Write and Run. That's how I'm managing my multiple projects and 10k training. These goals/activities are becoming the standard for my life.
