“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home.” - James Michener [SWIPE RIGHT ➡️]
One of the reasons why this journey has been such an adventure is the connection we've made with locals. People have been asking us what we consider the best thing about Pakistan and what makes it a great country to travel in, and our answer is: the hospitality of the people. In no other country it has been so easy to connect with the people and to immerse into the local culture as in Pakistan - if you're open to it.
In every country we've travelled so far, people are shocked when we tell them about the way we travel: staying with locals, entering strangers' homes with seemingly blind trust. In Germany, people said: "You are suicidal going to Pakistan", others ensured us that we'll have to bribe officers, that we'll be kidnapped, raped or worse if we want to travel overland. In Myanmar, people said we shouldn't trust other Burmese. That's what people in India said about other Indians. In Pakistan, they say we shouldn't trust strangers, travelling like this is too dangerous. Bottom line: people believe that we have been just very lucky that nothing has happened to us so far.
We don't believe that we have been lucky. We learned that in every country, people always assume the worst. For them, life seems to be full of dangers. But what danger is there if you don't think of any? We learned that trusting strangers, believing in the good of people and keeping an open mind and heart will literally take you places. After all, aren't we travelling to foreign places to learn about the food, the customs, the religion and the people?
