Turns out I’m not the only one that can demolish the equivalent of 4+ slices of bread when it comes to sushi! ⠀
⠀
Most people think of sushi as a ‘light’ lunch option, however as you can see it can provide the carbohydrate equivalent of 4 slices of white bread (sometimes more depending on what you pick!). It’s not much of a balanced lunch - a large amount of simple carbs with a teeny tiny amount of veg, not much in terms of protein with a substantial side of salt.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀
4 slices of bread (white, brown or any other colour for that matter) OR 12 thin rice cakes in one sitting is excessive for the AVERAGE person (especially those who are more sedentary).
⠀
The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommends 6 serves from the grains (cereal) food group per day, this works out to be 4 out of your 6 serves in just one meal! These recommendations are for women aged 19-50 years without any exisiting medical conditions (e.g fatty liver disease, diabetes etc) and who exercise for 30 minutes most days.

So it isn’t that carbohydrates are an issue, it’s more the amount people can consume in one sitting without even knowing. That’s the REAL issue.

Educating people in understanding exactly what they are eating is important, especially in chronic disease. I find breaking down store bought meals and comparing them to something people can visualise is the best way to show people exactly what they are eating.

Working in diabetes, the glycaemic load (carbohydrate amount) of a meal is something I focus on, however I have found in clinical practice most individuals can benefit from an increased understanding around this subject, especially with the sedentary lifestyles most individuals lead.

This isn’t me promoting food fear, these are facts! Plain and simple. Knowledge is power, and with the knowledge we gain the better everyday choices we can make.

Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t eat sushi, eat ALL the sushi you want if you’re going out for dinner to a sushi bar, that’s different...

...if it is something you are consuming DAILY for lunch because you THINK you are making a ‘balanced’ choice, a wholegrain sandwich with protein and salad would serve you fat better!

Usually, most of us are busy and there are plenty of times where we might not have time to prepare an ideal meal. At the moment, a lot of us have plenty of time but are just lazy and don’t feel like preparing an actual meal. While it might be tempting to stop by a drive thru on your way to school or work or just to get a quick bite to eat, there are even quicker and healthier options (cheaper too).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you’re truly in a rush, grab a protein shake and banana. It’s an extremely convenient snack with carbs and protein that does not require any preparation. This is just one example. You could grab a different fruit, yogurt, or protein bar. In a perfect situation, I’d suggest having your meals prepared ahead of time but just because you don’t, that doesn’t mean you need to resort to eating crap.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Anyone selling you some sort of fad that you can eat this and that and all the junk food in the world given you remain under a certain caloric intake or something is not setting you up for a healthy and successful lifestyle. If you want to lose fat, you have to make your your health your priority, not a caloric deficit. Your body has to be healthy for it to run efficiently and effectively which, yes, includes burning body fat. We want foods that are filling, wholesome, nutrient-dense, and void of processed chemicals and garbage. Once we have that foundation, then we can worry about being in a caloric deficit in which is not even made through nutrition but rather through exertion (exerting more energy beyond your caloric maintenance to put yourself in that deficit as opposed to eating 500 less calories than you should be eating).
