Recipe 7/52: Stir-fried chayote
First time cooking and eating chayote! Chayote is a plant that originated from Mexico and Central America, and it's used in salads and other dishes in Latin American cuisines.
Many countries in Asia consume chayote too - Filipinos make soup with the fruit and use it in stir fries, the Chinese eat the young leaves and shoots (termed 龙须菜), and the Indians add the entire vegetable to their curries.
Taste-wise, the chayote fruit (which I used in my dish!) is pretty mild and offensive. Its taste and texture resembles a cucumber, and I stir-fried it with plenty of garlic to give it more flavour.
