This was such an amazing feeling. I was selected to run as a semi-elite runner for the US, and it was my personal best marathon time until Chicago 2018 (I ran 3:17). I remember having dead legs the day before because jet lag really hit me hard, I hadn’t been eating or resting well that week, and toured Kyoto first (bc I mean I was in JAPAN!).
I flew my longest flight ever and went all by myself, took public transportation everywhere (which is hard when it’s in Japanese lol), and just tried to be a part of the community. I had this “ah-ha” moment the night before as I was relaxing and stressing about the race...i thought to myself “I’m a girl from extremely humble beginnings from a small town in Wisconsin. Even if I don’t run the race I want to tomorrow, I’ve WON.” I was never seriously active before I started running at 31, and most people don’t leave my town, let alone run as a select group of runner in TOKYO. I don’t know if there is anything I’ve done in my life (outside of my kids) that I’m more proud of myself for accomplishing. Some women won’t even go out to dinner solo, but it is so empowering. We should all take trips solo sometimes just to learn more about ourselves. This will always be one of the highlights of my life. 👊🏼✨❤️ #womenempowerment #dreambig #travelsolo #tokyomarathon #abbottwmm #sixstarfinisher #runtheworld - 7 minutes ago
